Moms who had GD in during their 1st pregnancy....

If you had GD during your first pregnancy, how many months were you when you took your 1 hour glucose test during your second pregnancy? Did you have GD the second time around? Did you feel symptoms of GD (e.g., always thirsty, dry mouth after eating carbs) very early in your pregnancy?

I did not have GD in my second pregnancy. I was tested at 16 weeks and again at 28 weeks. In fact they tested me 3 times because DS was huge but I didn't have it.

Re: Moms who had GD in during their 1st pregnancy....

I had GD during my first pregnancy. And I DEFINATELY had it .... I can honestly say that sometimes my blood sugar levels weren't great. We only controlled with diet but I ended up with a 10lb baby anyway!

This time around I had my GD test at I believe 24-26 weeks. I don't remember exactly. I failed my 1 hour but only with like a 147, my first pregnancy it was 183 and he never even sent me for the 3hour.

This time he sent me for the 3hour and I passed with flying colors. My levels were 110 after the 1 hour and as low as 62 after 3 hours.

I did insist on him writing me a prescription for test strips ANYWAy so that I could monitor my Blood Sugar since I had a history of GD. I was convinced that somehow I passed the test but I still had it.

Well, I've been testing all along and my numbers have been great. Usually around 70-80 when I wake up, and in the 80-90 range after meals.

And my baby is measuring about 2 lbs less then my daughter measured at all of the same growth sonos!

I have lost some weight since my first pregnancy, and I heard that age can be a factor also. I heard that overweight women who are under 25 have an increased risk of GD. I was 26 when I had my first DD, I am 33 now, so maybe that has something to do with it!

Did you find that you were more careful in what you ate because you were at risk for it? Do you think better eating habits contributed to your not having GD?

Re: Moms who had GD in during their 1st pregnancy....

I was more careful in what I ate during this pregnancy. I had done weight watchers for 18 months leading up to this pregnancy so I was in the habit of tracking all of my food. I have continued to do so throughout the pregnancy and I feel like it keeps me in line. When I do not track I pick on way too many snacks. I have a DD now so we always have things like goldfish, cookies, etc in the house and I pick on them too much if I don't write down my food...so tracking was a must for me.

I had GD with my first pregnancy, but not my second. They tested me early in the second pregancy, I think around 6 weeks, and then every few weeks thereafter.

i will tell you that I am currently being tested for pre-Diabetes now as there is a strong family history of Diabetes which significantly increases if someone is diagnosed with GD. Good luck!!!

the dr told me today if you had it with your first you take the test at 16 weeks, if you didn't you take the test at 28 weeks. he also said if you had it with first you have a higher risk of having it again and if you didn't have it the first time then you "most likely" won't have it the 2nd time. But of course everyone is different.

And my doctor told me that there is no point doing the test until after 24 weeks because the placenta won't interfere with insulin until after that point. He said if you take the test before 24 weeks and you get a positive, it isn't just GD, it is full blown diabetes and you will continue to have it after pregnancy!

Not entirely true. The cut-off numbers for GD are much lower than the cut-offs for Type 2 diabetes, so you could have blood glucose numbers below what would diagnose you as having Type 2 but still be diagnosed with GD. However, if you are early in pregnancy or post-pregnancy and have numbers in the GD (but not Type 2) range, you may be pre-diabetic.
