Moving. Boxes. Packing. Ugh, and question.

So this is my 3rd move in 4 years. Thank goodness we are buying and in wont have to move for 20 years at least. (unless we win the lottery).

(and as a side note, I watched both Rachel Zoe and Kim zolciack move. I wonder what's it like to be so rich to tell your staff "um, move me in one week, and when I get to the new house, I want to walk into an unpacked and ready house". Who is so rich that that happens????)

Anyway. Moving sucks the big fat wad. Just wNted to get that out there.

Oh, did I mention the basement full of boxes that DH never even looked at when we moved from his/our apartment in NYC???

Ok. Second vent over.

How long in advance did you start packing? I seem to recall I started like 3 months in advance with all my breakables, chatchkis and anything else I coud live without. We think/know we will move anywhere from mid march to end of April. More than likely the end of April. So I do have 10 weeks to reLly get this shizz done. So I am in a very good spot, I think. I can't WAIT to throw stuff out!!!!!!

But I know I'm gonna have to do it all myself, like last time.

Start now!

The longer you have, the more organized you will be. I started packing only 1 month before my move and by the last week, I was throwing stuff in boxes and I still can't find my steamer!

yes start now, when we sold our condo we waited till the very last minute and it was a nightmare trying to pack it all up. This time, I will be packing way in advance

Re: Moving. Boxes. Packing. Ugh, and question.

I will say that DH's company moved us, and packed us all up. We had to unpack. I asked how much it would have cost if we had to pay for it ourselves and they said 4,000 for the packing, moving, and the insurance. It was part of DHs moving benefits. I thought it was fantastic. I remember moving myself and oh that was horrible. I would start now. It took me almost a month of packing to move and that was a one bedroom apartment. The thing I learned was that you need to first purge, donate, recycle what you don't want. Why bring trash to a new home? If you have boxes from your last move still sitting in storage, I would ask yourself do you really need any of it? I would look through it, but think about donating/trash/recycling.

Then I would do room by room and color code with those little circle stickers. On the box write what is in each box. Create a note book with the contents of the boxes and number the boxes so you can reference things. HTH

Its crazy how much you accumulate over the years, I was so shocked that we had so much crap in our 2 Bdrm Apt. I donated a bunch of clothes and threw out a lot of junk, do that now. Also get all the help you can get from friends/family.

Re: Moving. Boxes. Packing. Ugh, and question.

i dont ever think its too early. and definitely not early now, imo.

we had a 1 bedroom apartment and we started to pack only a month and week or so before moving (because we didnt want to pack before we absolutely knew we were getting the house/loan commitment). anyway, it was hectic but i packed almost everyday a minimum of 2 or 3 boxes and made sure to label them on all sides.

good luck!!

I Usually pack in a week. But I think I have moved no less than 15 times in my life so I have become an expert packer over time

Re: Moving. Boxes. Packing. Ugh, and question.

I move all the time- since college- 15 times easily

I started friday bringing all my breakables to my new place- mostly in re-usable grocey bags and rubbermaid bins- this way I don't waste time and money on bubble wrap (I have a full size SUV and the seats go down)

unpacked that- and took the bags back to re-use

went home from round 2- most clothes- in garbage bags- on the hanger still

I use big black garbage bags for clothes, towels, blankets etc everything soft

2 trips yesterday-

then today all the furniture- I had help- I am on the 3rd floor and it's a walk up- I didn't carry anything heavy (2 guys)

plus the 2 flat screens and odds and ends in my SUV

I had my new cleaning lady and one of the girls that works with me helping as well (this was a HUGE help)

that was all done by 1:30pm- got to the apartment at 11:45

I was done by 5:30- completely unpacked

I even left for 30 mins to sell some thing from craigs list and clock out a 4 mile run with my car
