Is it normal...

..to not get an appointment with your OB until 6-8 weeks after conception?

I just want blood work to confirm...but the 2 doctors I called said not until 6-8 weeks.

Does anyone know why? What's the logic behind it? Are they banking that you might lose the babY before then!?Chat Icon

Re: Is it normal...

My doctor wouldn't see me until I was 7-10 days past my missed period. I don't know the reasoning...but it put me at around 6 weeks when I had my first appointment...

Re: Is it normal...

Mine wouldn't see me until at least 8 weeks. Sounds horrible but I really think it's bc the greatest chance of MC is before then. One girl I know managed to get in earlier but she said all they did was a pee test anyway. There's not really much to do.

6 weeks isn't so bad to wait if you just want to confirm. I couldn't get in until I was 9 weeks! I admit it was a hard wait!

Re: Is it normal...

Try not to freak out - in reality most doctors are like this. Heck there are some who won't see you until 10 wks!

If you are perfectly healthy and there is no previous issues, waiting until 6-8 weeks is normal.

My doctor will not see me until I am 8 weeks. She said that you can usually hear the hb better when you are between 7-10 weeks. So, they gave me an appt somewhere in the middle.

Re: Is it normal...

I saw my OB 8 weeks from my last period. I think it's pretty standard. But, I did go for a blood test to confirm. My PCP suggested it.

My midwives wouldn't see me until 8 weeks. They wound up getting me in around 6-7 weeks for an US since I had spotting.

This is the common practice. And it is not that they're banking on their patients having a m/c its just that unfortunately they are VERY common during the very early weeks.

wow, I never heard of this , or I should say never had this issue. With my first my OB wanted to see me right away and this was a new dr, but I couldn't go till around 10 weeks because there were problems with the insurance.
With my second my OB (different OB ) had me go in the week I found out, I was only 4.5 weeks . She did BT and sono.
And now with this one , I went to a new high risk OB , I didn't plan on going in until I was at least 6-8 weeks and didn't think they would take me before that, but they insisted I go in asap, I was only 4w6d.

Re: Is it normal...

mine wouldnt see me until my 8th week but i was able to get a blood test from my endocrinologist due to my thyroid.

Did you try to contact your PCP to see if they can do the blood test for you?

Re: Is it normal...

When your a high risk patient ypur seen sooner and more often than a regular patient.

Most drs do not see you until 8-10 weeks usually. The heartbeat is detectible then so they know its a viable pregnancy. Its unfortnately the sad truth.

My practice has you come in to see your gyn for blood to confirm as soon as you get your bfp at home and then you make an appointment between 8-10 weeks with the ob.

Re: Is it normal...

Most practices don't do blood work. If you have a history of miscarriage or high risk pregnancy, you'd likely go in for blood work. Otherwise, it's pretty common to not be seen until you're at least 6-8 weeks.

Re: Is it normal...

When I called after my BFP at 4 weeks, they made my first appt for 7.5 weeks. I was glad to wait even though it was torture b/c by that time we saw the bean and a heartbeat (and I was measuring a few days behind). If I had gone earlier, we might not have seen all of that and I would have been even more worried. Unfortunately...the wait for the first appt suxxxxx. Hang in there!! :)

Yep, very normal! At my practice they usually schedule you for 7-8 weeks after your last period.

With this pregnancy (my second) they saw me at exactly 6 weeks because my first was a preemie because of pre-eclampsia and they wanted to put me on baby aspirin right away and check to make sure everything looked good. Otherwise I would have had to wait another week or two.

That said, by 6 weeks I was driving myself CRAZY. The worst case scenarios kept running through my head. I would have driven myself crazy if they made me wait until 8 weeks. And forget if they said 10 weeks!
