How do you go about getting negative info removed from credit history in return for full payment?
My husband has an outstanding balance from a nasty real estate office he used to rent from. They were ******* with hundreds of people complaining about them on the internet and I hope that place burns ... however, the charge is there and at this point there is nothing we can do about it but pay. I would like to make it disappear and out of our lives. I do however want to make sure the collection agency removes any negative info from his history. The charge went into collection about 2-3 months ago.
How do I do that? Do I send a letter? Do I call? What if they cash our check and not remove it? How do I make sure that doesn't happen?

Before you pay them send them a debt validation letter. If you google debt validation letter you should be able to get some samples. Let the collection agency verify the debt. If they can't which most don't they have to remove it from your report.
ETA: If they do validate the debt your DH can settle with the agreement that once he pays them they remove the info from his credit report. Best to do all of this in writing and DO NOT pay them until they agree to this.

Yep, what Jacqui said.
Send a debt validation letter, dispute with the credit bureaus.
If you want more help, check out creditboards.com forums, there is a plethora of info there that can help you out. Sample letters etc.

Sorry to Hijack but I have a question too... My apt complex sent me to collection same story (idiot people, messing with every one, internet complaints etc) They changed management (which is what they do after enough complains this is the 3rd time) and my debt when to collection. Then I spoke to them and said I wanted to deal with the apt complex directly. They stopped calling. Stopping mailing.
Its still on my credit report. Do I just pay the complex? Will it drop off? hrm. I can't even remember who the collection folks were anymore. Its been nearly 2 yrs.

Try disputing it with the credit bureaus and sending a debt validation letter disputing it to the agency reporting it.
Just paying it won't erase it, they'll just change the status from unpaid to pd and you'll still have a collection on your credit report.

WOW, thank you SO much! Very informative! I googled the letter and got a few good examples! Now I am on my way to solving this!

Dispute it with the credit reporting agencies directly as not mine. See if it drops off.
If it doesn't then I would send a letter to the collection agency directly asking them to remove it.

Really, can I do that? I mean I *DID* live there. I'm not into fibbing much, can ya tell! I'm terrible at this stuff. I always figure it will come back to haunt me. Considering I do insurance for a living fraud is a major no no. How do you just say "its not mine" when it is? I mean its $187 I dont mind paying it, just forgot
I did debate since they charged me for a day's rent even tho I didnt live there (turned in my keys at 1am) but they say they needed them by 5pm the day before. HOwever my apt wasn't ready on time it was two weeks before I could move in. So frankly F them! One day's rent my hiney. I agrued but they pushed me off into collections, I pushed I wanted them to resolve it and it sorta disappeared but still on my credit report.
