i have a coworked who always tell me how beautiful I am - not in a creepy office guy way but you can tell he wants me to really believe it. im not thin or model material but i have nice skin and hair and eyes and he always tells me how i should see myself as beautiful because so many others do.

it does make me feel good, especially after having one of those mornings where nothing fits right or looks how i want it too... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

I worked with a student with Asperger's Syndrome who after I worked with him, told me he learned so much about himself and he will always view his disorder differently after working with me.

Some of the moms of young children I worked with told me they will always remember me as an important part of their children's progress.

Those words mean the world to me.

I thought of another one! In a grad school class talking about sexuality, the question was raised how will you explain homosexuality to your child one day? I don't remember my answer, but a few people then said "will you come teach my children about homosexuality, and other important life issues, too?"

Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

Someone once said that I was their "go-to" girl in times of need and panic, that they were stuck in a foxhole, I was the one they'd want to have by their side.

I thought that was pretty awesome.

ETA:

For my job, I help kids and every time a mother thanks me, I must admit, my heart swells a bit with pride. There is NOTHING in the world like having a parent thanking you for helping save their child's life.

Doesnt happen very often but when I wear my hair a certain way or use makeup on certain features, I am told I am a ringer for certain celebrities..of course, when I was about 20 lbs thinner, it happened a lot more often!

Once at a store, a little kid stopped dead in her tracks and pointed at me thinking "OMG its (whoever celebrity or gorgeous model she thought I resembled).." An ex boyfriend admitted he emailed me from a dating site precisely because he had a crush on a model who looked like me in the 80s..very cute..Chat Icon

Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

During my second year teaching, I had a boy in my class with severe writing difficulties. The way my spelling quizzes were created, he was forced to write his letters much smaller than he was used to. It didn't seem like a big deal....but at the end of the year, his mother thanked me for being so good to her son...and she told me that those spelling quizzes challenged him, and when he knew he could do them, he gained more confidence in himself...which was something he had trouble with due to his various issues (not just the handwriting).
He went on to college and comes back to visit me from time to time...and he has grown into such an amazing young man...it makes me so proud to know that I was a part of it.

Having my DS' teacher say "Keep doing what you're doing cause you're doing it right".

Having my DD's therapists say "You're an amazing mom".

My friends say it too and it means so much. Chat Icon Chat Icon

My MIL, who has a totally different parenting style than I do, and probably thinks a lot of the stuff I do is crazy, told me that I was doing a great job with DD Chat Icon

Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

I've had a few co-workers or colleagues, much older than I, with many more credentials and years of experience say things like "I come to you because I know you have the answers."

I have had one social worker approach me (also years older than me) to say that he would love to open a company with me geared to the specific population we work with.

(Didn't take him up on it because I have no desire to be self-employed seeing what DH goes through Chat Icon ).

Our boss at work is also really tough and can be hard to read. At times he can come off as a total PITA. I have had several people approach me to say that he speaks very highly of me when I'm not around.

Of course I have had many clients and colleagues thank me for the work that I do through the years, and it feels great to hear it, especially since it is so rare. I can be having a totally rotten day, and this will turn it around completely.

i love all of these Chat Icon

once, when my niece was very young, 1 or 2 - i was taking care of her while my sister was away and my mother was at work. playing with her, feeding her dinner, bathing her, putting her to bed - the whole deal. i was a teenager at the time. i remember my dad being home, sitting back and watching and said "you'll be a really good mom someday". my dad is NOT forthcoming with compliments or emotions... it's something i've never forgotten.

8th Graders: "You're our favorite teacher...you teach things in a way you can understand." Or the long, emotional thank you letter I got from a kid I mentored in our at-risk program, or the Thanksgiving thank yous I get from high school kids who still call me the best teacher they ever had, or the email I got in September from a girl who won a poetry contest to have her poem published on the side of local buses, telling me that I opened her up to the "creative side of English" and made her love it Chat Icon

And when I was falling in love with DH those 8 long years ago: "Falling in love with you is like peeling layer after layer of wrapping paper off the best present." Chat Icon

My students have said wonderful things to me over the years. An old student recently emailed me to congratulate me on my baby and said how lucky he was to have me as a mom Chat Icon
