Re: Anyone ever try to get a lower price on their cable bill?

i think its pretty good. We have Fios right now and only phone and internet ..cable is with Direct TV.
(i live in pa) We were paying comcast about $90 a month for phone/internet when the verizon sales person insisted she could get us FIOS that was faster than comcast and phone for $65 a month.

Which she did but it was the slowest rate of Fios around and not faster than comcast. However Verizon upgraded us to the fastest package which would have been $95 a month for the first year. So this summer I think it goes to $95 for the 2 services, but they took $30 a month off.

so I dont think $25 off is a bad deal.

are there premium channels included for that price?

i tried negotiating with verizon after some stuff in our contract was up and they really would NOT budge. Especially since we don't get free DVR and I had mentioned I knew others who do- they gave me this whole thing that the free DVR is for "new customers only". We like verizon too much though to ever want to switch to cablevision.

Are there any other options in your area? Your negotiating power would be dependant on that.

We switch back and forth between Cablevision and FiOS based on who has a better deal. I like Cablevision's phone and internet better but, I like FiOS tv (although I really don't watch much other than Nick Jr so it really doesn't matter).

I agree with this, we've leveraged prices between carriers to get things reduced.

The most we've saved is $35/month.

Re: Anyone ever try to get a lower price on their cable bill?

I had called in September after hurricane Irene and they had me on the phone for over an hour negotiating. Finally got them down $30 and 20 minutes later I am told that they can't do that since we were already getting some piddly discount. We looked into alternatives but were stuck. So, when we moved, DH tried to negotiate with them and they still wouldn't budge. I called and told them that I would be cancelling his service request and then setting it up as new under my name. Sales was able to do what their retention department couldn't and lowered us down to what we would get as new customers.

I called about 2 months ago. I asked the agent who picked up the phone to speak to the termination department. When I spoke to the rep there he basically gave me anything I wanted to prevent me from cancelling. I was paying about 190 a month for triple play plus world call. After I called I got, triple play, world call, showtime on demand, and DVR for about 130 a month, taxes included. One trick I learned is that if you want to call them do not tell them that you are transferring your service, because they they freeze your phone number and prevent you from transfering it with a new provider.

So what exactly do you say the? Just that you want to cancel and then just see what they say?

I wouldn't say that you want to cancel because they may take you up on it. When I called I just said I was looking to reduce my bill.

Re: Anyone ever try to get a lower price on their cable bill?

I tried getting a lower price with Cable when they raised my bill to 179 for basic cable only, phone and internet. There were no extra channels added at all. I tried getting a discount, since so many people have done it. I went to the top of the top over the phone, spoke to supervisor after supervisor and even threatened to switch to FIOS. We ended up switching to FIOS and it was the best decision we ever made. We love it!! The DVR alone is so much better. Cable would not release our phone number so we had to get a new number and we have to dial 516 whenever we make a call but I don't think we would go back to cable and they haven't called to get us back.

Wow! Thanks for the great information on this thread. We are on LI and were paying 174.00 for basic cable, no movie channels. I called yesterday and got the bill lowered to 136.00 and they gve me all the movie channels! I told them we were going with Verizon. This is for the next two years with a savings of over 700.00

Awesome!!

I'm wondering if anyone who does not have FIOS as an option has been able to do better. Our bill just went up recently and I keep meaning to call them but I hate dealing with the stupid games they play. I'm in and area where FIOS is not available so I don't have that leverage. Chat Icon

Hmmm, maybe you should threaten to leave? Dont say you're going with someone else just maybe say that you are thinking about dropping it all together because its too much money. Its worth a shot.

Re: Anyone ever try to get a lower price on their cable bill?

I had the TP with Cablevision. I think at the time with everything we paid $112...deal ended bill went up. I called the explain that I wasnt happy, etc. THe best hte offered was the Silver TP (I had the basic TP) I explained I didnt want more channels I wanted a lower bill. THey didnt do much else.

So I went to FIOS. Stayed there for 1 year...cablevision knocked on my door. I signed up, Called Fios to explain, Got the WORST CS person ever...went back to cable... I have a 2 year deal. At which point I will probably leave again if need be. As the FIOS installer told me, my house is now wired for both, its easy to play the game and go back and forth if need be every few years. I dont care who my provider is...just that my bill is fair. My bill is like $112 again with cable.

And I do understand why Cablevision doenst do much on the negiotiating front when you call threatening. Do you know how many people probably call DAILY with that same threat but never follow through....They play the odds and figure if they do leave, they might return. They have a whole group of people who are dedicated to just winning customers back.

Re: Anyone ever try to get a lower price on their cable bill?

I haven't read all the posts, so excuse me for repeating anything.

We had Optimum and tried to get lower rates. None were "available" to us every time we tried. We finally switched to Verizon FIOS. Cablevision called a billion times with the best deals you can imagine. BUT I told them they could give it to me for free and it wouldn't matter. They should've taken care of me as a customer when I asked. It's their loss. If Verizon does the same to me in a year, I'll switch and keep playing that game until I can't do it anymore. There's no reason to spend so much money on something others are getting for much less.

WOW! Great customer service and customer retention.Chat Icon
I couldn't imagine what would happen to me if I told one of my customers who called to complain about something to go find another company to do business with if they didn't like it.
I can assure you I wouldn't have a job for long!

Yet another reason I freakin' HATE cablevision.
