Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

I remember a little girl – must have been like 4yrs old – coming to our office midtown for a Christmas thing we were doing for the employees kids. Another cowoker and I were down stairs with a Santa hats giving all the kids who came in a bag of goodies and checking them in.

One little girl came in with her mom so shy so scared. Her mom as trying to get her to take her jacket off and she was hiding behind her mom’s thigh. I had no kids back then.

I tried to hand her the goodie bag from a distance or to her mom, I didn’t want to frighten her. She pulled her mom down and whispered something. Then the mom asked me “Can she hug you?” ummm wha? Sure. The mom was surprised too and said she doesn’t like strangers.

The little girl took her coat off slowly staring at me the whole time. She then walked over shyly and slowly. She got up close (I bent down trying not to scare her) and she threw her arms around my neck gave me the THE BIGGEST hug ever and whispered to my ear “I love you”

It shook me to the core.

I told her I loved her too and wished her a Merry Christmas. Mom was sorta freaked. But I will ALWAYS remember that little girl.

A lot of people are saying very, very nice things about me and DH on the pet board right now. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

On the last day of high school, one of my classmates came up to me. We had chatted casually a couple of times since we had gym class together. She came up to me and said, "I just want you to know that you are the nicest person I've ever met."

All of these things make me feel really good!

Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

Recently one of the boys from one of the group homes at my agency was transferred to a different agency. A few days before he was, he pulled me aside after the group therapy session that I run and asked me to advocate for him. He said he was asking me because he thinks we have a bond and those of us that he talked to about this he feels are like family and he loves us Chat Icon If you're in the social services field, or work with troubled teenagers, you know just how much something like this means.

Also, I've been recently going through a very difficult time in my life with the m/c and all. Several of my friends made a point to tell me that I am one of the strongest people they know. I've always seen myself as a strong person until the past few months where I've felt weak and powerless. Those reminders have helped put my life back into perspective.

It was a bunch of blurbs that were put on a laminated card from LIFers thanking me for taking photos of their kids for DebG.

I was so blown away by all the nice things & even more blown away when they pulled out a lens I had coveted.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm working at a new job this year (a private school for high functioning special ed students). One student of mine is having a particularly rough year and we got off to a rocky start. Within the last couple months he has sent me a couple emails and told the headmaster here that I am the best learning specialist he has ever worked with and I have made a huge difference in his life - he sends me emails thanking me for listening to him and talking to him Chat Icon Chat Icon He is the best young man ever and it's so, so touching when he does these things unprovoked!

Does "you are the best mommy in the world" count? This is from my child, and I love hearing him say this.

I remember years ago a coworker wrote on a card (don't remember the occassion) "there are very few truly good people in this world, and I feel honored to have met one of them," meaning me, which was really nice.

Another friend told someone I had nothing but good intentions and was a great person to have as a friend (I had been assigned to help the other person with a project and she was suspicious of the motives, the person who assigned me was less than kind). We wound up being good friends too, and she shared my first friend's words later.

I work with children and I get lots of hugs, always unsolicited. That's always a compliment.

This is a good post, I have to say, I don't remember the cruel things people say for the most part. I know they do, but it just doesn't stick with me.

Being told I was a good Mom & keeping my son & his Dad's relationship strong (we are not together) and not being bitter and using my son as revenge or keep him from seeing his Dad. I know its sounds like a "daaa" thing but it happens all the time.
Its not easy being single full time working mom with my son's dad out of state but you do what you have to do. no trophy needed just words of encouragement or someone saying they are proud of you is all worth it.

On my wedding day in August 2010, I was in the Rolls Royce with my maid of honor and we pulled up to the church. My mom and dad were there waiting for me. My dad and I have always had a rough relationship, he was an alcoholic and my childhood was beyond rough. Him and my mom divorced in 5 years earlier and since we were getting along better. He was never known to be mushy or say nice things but on that day of my wedding he opened up the car door for me and just looked at me in shock and he goes "wow, you look beautiful"

I'll never, ever forget that. He passed away a year later.

OK, this is simultaneously one of the cheesiest and yet most romantic things I ever heard! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

To answer the OP: people complimenting my kids or the job I am doing as a mom are always the nicest thing I can hear. Nothing else-how good I might look, how good I might be at my job-could ever come close!

The owner of the gym we go to told me that I've raised a very confident child. I think that speaks volumes.

If I ask DS (8.5yo) if he loves his mom, and he emphatically says yes. Then, when I ask him if he loves me, he says "I love your choice in wives."

..... does that count? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My students are generally pretty awesome about saying nice things, but the one I will always remember most was actually from my FIL. (Let me preface this by saying that my DH is an only child.) As I was leaving our "rehearsal dinner" (aka the bbq in my IL's backyard), I was hugging everybody goodbye. I hugged everyone before him, and when I got to my FIL, he hugged me, and then he looked at me and said, "Oh wow... by this time tomorrow, I'll have a daughter." Chat Icon The look on his face was just SO HAPPY. I love him. (I'm really lucky.)

Re: spinoff: nicest things people have said to you...

When I was about 8, I loved to wear funky hats. I would go antiquing with my grandmother and I would buy all of these weird hats. My mom used to try to stop me from wearing them to school (she was worried I would get made fun of). I wore them anyway. My 4th grade teacher had a thing where each week, a new kid was "kid of the week" and she had all of the other kids write one compliment about the kid of the week.

FIVE people wrote something to the effect of "Robin wears cool hats!" I felt so happy and validated!

A parent told me I was the best teacher her son ever had.

A woman looking to join the gym I go to saw me and asked me "Will I look like you if I join?"
