Is it possible my dog can sense that I'm pregnant?

I know this sounds crazy but she's been acting really anxious when I walk her the past week (just found out I'm pregnant a few days ago). She's never been like this before. She keeps lookin over her shoulder and in all directions as if she thinks someone is following us. And a couple of times she has stopped in her tracks and started trying to frantically pull me in the other direction when we were going towards other people or dogs. Today she was circling me to try to get me to turn around. I had DH walk her this morning and she wasn't doing it for him. He said she was normal. Do you think she's trying to be protective of me or am I being completely insane?Chat Icon

I personally believe our pets can sense these things.
My cat was super snuggly with me before I even suspected I was PG. Started following me everywhere, sleeping in our bed right up against me, etc.
Now that baby is home, he is all about the baby and comes to get me when the baby is crying.

i think they totally sense these things. My dog was attached to me in my first pregnancy, if DH went near me fast or ran up the stairs, she would go ballistic. She was so protective of me, it was very sweet Chat Icon
this pregnancy she is still clung to me but now she has my DS to compete with and he usually wins out!

When I was pregnant with DS#1 and now with this DS, my female cat sleeps above my head every single night. She stopped once DS was born.

I definitely think dogs can sense it. In the beginning of the my pregnancy, my dog would not leave my side for a minute, especially since DH doesnt come home til 10pm. When I would take a nap on the couch after work, she would lay on my stomach, and still occasionally does. I think its so sweet how they know how to take care of you :)

Totally agree with this... Our Bailey (female) is beyond clingy to me. Typically she is "Joe's dog". But the week before we found out she started getting weird - like she did with DS - and DH pointed it out saying, "I think you're pregnant... look at her, she won't leave your side."

I agree. I posted the same thing when I first found out I was pregnant. My shephard mix was sniffing my boobs and constantly at my feet (more than usual that is) They definitely sense something or smell something. Dogs have been known to sense cancer in their owners.

I know this sounds crazy, but shortly after finding out I was pregnant, my dog started hanging out the room that we're converting to the nursery. We've lived in this house for two years and the room has been completelyempty since the day we moved in. She never really went in there before, but for the past six months I find her just sitting in the middle of the room. She also constantly fights me for the snoogle, but so does my husband so I'm not putting much stock in that. Chat Icon

My Madison started acting strange very early in my pregnancy. Stopped jumping on me, sniffing me more than usual, creeping up to me, overall being very careful.
My Murphy on the other hand jumps on my belly and just doesn't get it. Chat Icon I love my babies!

Ok, so I guess maybe I"m NOT crazy! I think it's so amazing if my dog really can tell this early! I just don't know if I can keep walking her because I'm afraid I'm going to make her have a panic attack, she gets herself so worked up!

They can definitely sense it! Your chemical make-up has changed, so you smell different to your dog. Mine looks at me as if to say "Are you seriously doing this again?!" Chat Icon

My dog definitely knew with both pregnancies.
With DD - my dog laid his head on my belly all the time. He also changed from sleeping behind my knees in bed to curled up right against my belly.
He is doing the same exact thing with this pregnancy

Re: Is it possible my dog can sense that I'm pregnant?

My Dog definately knows. When I was very early on she would jam her nose into my belly button. Chat Icon Chat Icon And she NEVER did anything like that before...I swear she was sniffing to see what was different. And now that the baby moves a lot she lays across my belly for hours and doesn't flinch when the baby gives her a full body massage...not to mention she is apparently very upset when I leave the house, even if I only run to the store for 5 minutes. DH says that she sits on the bench by the kitchen window watching outside and whining until I return! All behaviors she never did before the pregnancy!

Re: Is it possible my dog can sense that I'm pregnant?

Yes they can. I am not Preggo but my parent's dog becomes extremely clingy to my sister each time she is pregnant. He did it with my other sister when she was pregnant and visiting. This is not a dog we had growing up or one that either sister lived in the house with.

After the babies were born he would go crazy looking for my sister if the baby started to cry and someone else hold her. And he would sniff my sister's chest and the babies mouth to make sure they were being fed. It was the craziest thing to watch. BUT he is absolutly the best protector of those kids. When they are together and their are "other people" (not immidate family) in the house he is right by their sides the whole time. Even when they are sticking toys in his ears or trying to ride him like a pony.
