how to end co-sleeping?
If you co-sleep or co-slept with your child, how did you wean them to sleep in their own bed? DS is 9 months, he hates his crib, screams bloody murder whenever he is in there so I was thinking of maybe waiting until he is a year old and try to put him in a toddler bed (in our bedroom) and then eventually move it into his room.
Is this a bad idea? I know it's mine and DH's fault for allowing him to sleep in our bed but i am at my wits end, I'm exhausted, he's exhausted and we need to get DS out of our bed soon!
Any suggestions? thoughts on my idea? Please help!!!

Re: how to end co-sleeping?
I did it a little later. Be sure you aren't going to go back. I did it over 3 days. I put a bed next to his crib in his room and slept there for a while. It was awful the first night. After that... He held my hand until asleep. Now he doesn't need someone in the same room. Good luck. I really enjoyed co sleeping. Hope you did too. Its hard to break.

Thanks for the advice. That's what I want to try, I know he's still way too young for a toddler bed but he's almost walking so I figure by a year old if I put it in my room and keep the door locked, even if he wakes up and slithers on the floor, he can't leave the room (i'm a light sleeper since I had him anyway) -- I just need sleep without a little knee in my back.

Re: how to end co-sleeping?
Relocate and negotiate LOL
I relocated her into her crib after she fell asleep for naps. I even once had her laying on a pillow and would move the whole pillow over to her room (yes I stayed in there with her). Then I found it was basically the cold flat hard crib mattress that bothered her. So I’d literally warm up her spot. We also tucked a receiving blanket down so it wasn’t so hard. Put her in there swaddled. More and more I transitioned sleep time to the floor so that she was on flat and hard surfaces. Then moved her into her crib for naps.
Overnights she slept with us mostly until after 1. My hubby says she transitioned at 4m. I don’t remember it that way. Then the same thing, we just transitioned her to her room. Moved her over there after she was asleep and let her wake up in there. She never fell asleep in her room until after two. But we never had a bedtime routine so.. maybe its our fault. We would go to her room with her, lay down on the floor beside her toddler bed and she’d finally go to sleep. Actually a few months she refused to sleep IN her bed and we all had to sleep on the floor beside her bed (oh my hips paid for those nights).
Now she goes to her room, we read her a story (or three) and she’s asleep.
I do not CIO. I figure her young years are the most precious. Sure it’s a pain some nights but I can’t ever get those nights back. Listening to her gurgle and wake up, listening to her sing to herself, count the stars, talk, watch her play with her hands or mostly just hold my hand as she sleep. Yeah, I don’t regret it one bit. I always knew she’d toss me out and sure enough she does. Its her room and her bed, “go away mom” I smile.

I've thought about this too....sleeping on the floor in his room for a little bit to get him accustomed to his room....I do have an air mattress, maybe we'll try it this way.
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one dealing with this. I don't want to CIO, he gets very upset if I leave him in his room alone while he's awake and it just stresses me out so it's not an option for us.
Thanks!

Re: how to end co-sleeping?
I have the same issue...had mine in a bassinette until she tried to climb out, around 5 mos. Now, at 9.5 mos, we finally got her crib (moved into a house w space for it), but /i don't want to make her cry it out. Any ideas would be appreciated.

i don't think he is too young... DD was in a twin on the floor at 8 months old.. she HATED the crib.. she did great once she was moved.
the earlier the transition the easier it is for them NOT to get out of bed...
thats just me. i have friends in japan, and they are amazed that americans have their children in a crib, and not only that, but for SO DAMN long... beyond a year or two.

Re: how to end co-sleeping?
8 months? WOW! I've heard that you should transition when they can climb out of the crib. Why do Japenese folk take babies out of the crib so early?

Re: how to end co-sleeping?
most of them don't use cribs or traditional beds... its a mattress on the floor before it goes onto a platform...

Wow, 8 months...that's great!!!
I am definitely going to get him the toddler bed and try it! The bed is 4 inches from the ground and it had small rails just in case he rolls around, he won't get hurt bc he's basically on the floor. He already manages to slither off of the couch so the toddler bed won't be an issue.
Thanks for ur reply!

Re: how to end co-sleeping?
I ferberized just before 6 months...it took less than a week. It wasn't easy to hear him cry like that...but I'm glad I did it. Even though I miss my little boo...
