Question about my 2 month old's feeding and weight

I went to the doctor today for my 2 month checkup. My baby weighs 13.6 lbs (up from 9.5 at his 1 month). She asked how often he eats - I said I feed him whenever he is hungry which is usually every 2-3 hours. He sleeps anywhere from 6-9 hours straight through the night without eating (I don't wake him). My question is how much your DS weighed at 2 months and how long they ate. I am breastfeeding only...haven't began bottles yet so I can't measure the amount he eats. Should I try to push his feedings back even though he might be hungry? I hate to see him cry when I know I could be helping him. She didn't say this was overweight or anything...just that he should be feeding less now. My husband looked it up when we got home and said most sites said you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. True? Thanks!!

Re: Question about my 2 month old's feeding and weight

I heard you can't overfeed a BF baby too. I demand feeding, so I feed her whenever she is hungry...it's usually 2-3 hours during the day and she is almost 4 months. I only feed from one side..I have an oversupply.

If your dr isn't concerned, I wouldn't stress it. Maybe he just had a big growth spurt this month?

At 2 months she was 11.1

i would continue to do what your doing! i agree with pp.

babies don't eat bc they are bored -they eat because they are hungry - IF they do overeat it comes right back up !

Re: Question about my 2 month old's feeding and weight

Continue to do what you're doing. DS was 13.1 lbs at 2 months. He was EBF and ate about every 3 hours. His biggest weight gain was from birth to 2 months. Then it slowed down a lot. You have nothing to be worried about. BF babies tend to gain weight faster during the first 6 months.

ETA: I can't believe your doctor said he should be eating less by now. It's completely normal for newbrons to eat every 2-3 hours. I think it's fantastic that your DC is sleeping for such long stretches through the night. DC is obviously satisfied by the feeding shcedule during the day.

Re: Question about my 2 month old's feeding and weight

I BF both my DD and DS and I think they ate every 2-3 hrs until they started solids around 6 months! I dont think that is too much at 2 months old at all!

I would keep doing what you are doing...my 5 week old is eating more than that (1.5 hrs sometimes) and I dont see that changing anytime soon! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Question about my 2 month old's feeding and weight

I took my DD to the Dr yesterday for her 2 month appointment. She weighs 12 lbs and is breastfed in demand every 2-3 hours. At night ill usually feed her every 4-6 hours. I also heard that you can't over feed a baby. I wouldn't worry,-)

This was me too. DD nursed every two hours until she was about 6-7 months old! I wouldn't worry.

DD was 10 pounds at a month, but she came home at 5-13.

Sounds like you're doing great!

My LO is almost six months old and still eats every 2-3 hours. Even at night!

Re: Question about my 2 month old's feeding and weight

DD was a little under 9.5 lbs at her 2 month visit, up from 7.14 at her 1 month. I feed her on demand which is usually every 2-3 hours except at night.

I have heard that you can't overfeed a BF baby too. Although my breastfeeding book said they should gain 1-2 lbs a month at this point. I think it said if they gain more it's a sign of hyperlactation.
