Re: Do I compromise? or is DH being a stick in the mud? re:used clothes.
I'm not sure why people are getting so defensive about those who don't buy from thrift shops. Who really cares if someone buys their childs wardrobe from Once Upon a Child, or from Nordstroms????

Yah, I didn't see anyone get defensive, just stating their point of view which is okay.

I don't mind clothes from friends (or people I know) but I wouldn't buy used clothes where I don't know who wore them before.
Can i ask a question (not to be snarky i swear), but what difference does it make if you know the person or not? Are you only friends with super clean/non skin disease carrying people? I never understood this reasoning
If you're washing the clothes in hot water anyway (which presumably will be enough to clean them thoroughly), why does it matter where they came from?
Because I know where they are coming from. I know whether the parent is clean (or dirty) If I go into a place that sells second hand clothes I know NOTHING about where they come from and I don't like that. My first son never wore a hand-me-down until he was about 4 years old. I just never needed anything.
EXACTLY THIS!! The few hand me downs my son has worn were from my ex's cousin. We've been in their house, know it's clean- no bed bugs, no lice, etc.
The few times I've been in a consignment shop to sell my clothes, I left itching anf freaked out- I personally am not a fan! I wouldn't wear 2nd hand clothing from a consignment shop, so I'm def not going to have my son. If money was ever that I tight, I'd buy used for myself before my DS. Again, just a personal decision.
With all that said, all clothes are washed before either one of us wear them- whether its new from a store or from family.

DS has tons of hand me downs. I don't even see it as a monetary necessity, because we could buy everything new, but like as Julie said, I would rather put the money towards his college account or something more important rather than buying new jeans for $40 when I can get them for free or so much less.
That said, I've bought DS used clothes too. He has an amazing North Face coat I bought for like $10 that is list $200--I would rather buy great brands used then be spending more on a winter coat from Walmart. I don't see how kids could ridicule him for name brands if you don't know where they came from.

I stalk you on the Buy Sell Swap thread... DS received so many wonderful, beautiful condition clothes. It's helped us a lot!
Umm...are you selling anything now?

My DH is like yours and would never let me buy used clothes. It completely and totally skeeves him out and he would never let me buy them from a store.
He *might* let me use it from someone we know second hand, but that's about it.

FM me with what size he's in now! We're having another boy, but when I counted that Will has 15 (yes 15!!!!!) khakis in a size 3T, DH is making me get rid of most and only keep 2 of each color!

Re: Do I compromise? or is DH being a stick in the mud? re:used clothes.
Have not needed to buy DS clothes yet and won't for a long time (the kid has a full wardrobe up until 24months from shower and gifts). But I would totally take hand me downs, why not? I dont know of any second hand stores, and there are so many sales and coupons on kids clothing that I dont think I would buy second hand but I'm not opposed to it. I cant believe how quickly DS has been growing out of his clothes, it seems so wasteful, he wore most of his things once, twice if I am lucky!!

I'm a germaphobe, so I'm siding with your DH on this one, sorry! I seem to be in the minority though if that makes it any better. I won't mind putting a second DD in first DD's clothes that still look new but that's about it. As a pp said, all I'd be thinking is "who knows where those clothes have been". Don't let my neurosis sway you though!

Re: Do I compromise? or is DH being a stick in the mud? re:used clothes.
I see no issue with it. We get hand me downs and have shopped before at Once Upon a Child. I would probably shop there more often but it's not convenient. We pass along all of DS clothes/toys that he has outgrown. As he gets older the pickings are a little slimmer though.... toddlers really wear out their clothes.
ETA: Some of the best things that we get are dress shoes from our neighbor. He'll wear them once... who wants to pay for something you only wear once! And their kids usually only wear them once too.
