if you are overweight....? u[pdate

Did your ob tell u that u will get high blood pressure and pre eclampsia??? I was told today that I WILL.... Not maybe or likely. I do not have high bp now so I guess he is basing thls on me being fat alone. Thoughts?

update kinda...

i have the ob that said this to me and a perinatologist bc i am high risk. the ob wasnt in today so i call the peri and spoke to the nurse. told her my issues and we will bring it up to the peri next week and see what he says.

how i feel is this....
i knowwww bc i am old and fat that i have increased risk of alot of things....plus i am ivf and have blood clotting issues.

i have no problems with docs saying...ther is an increased risk of blank due to weight or age or etc.... lets test for it.

but if all tests are normal why say i will get something?
my bps highest reading was 130/80...with my average being 120/80

yesterday was 130/70 but that was not with a large cuff which is necessary for accurate bp readings.

if i do get high bp i want to treat it proactively.

the peri usually tells mea million things that could go wrong..bc hey its his job to triple check things...but yeah i am pissed about the ob...especially since right before he hit me with his crystal ball statement..i was telling him i am veryyyyy emotional and may be having some pregnancy depression and anxiety arghs!

as of now...if my peri DOES agree that i WILL get high bp and pre eclampsia..then i will just suck it up and deal with the ob.

if the peri next week says ...high risk but we need to check for it...
then i just dont know what to do.
my first instinct is to find another ob asap....but this ob and peri work verrrry closely together and alot of obs do not with this peri.

i am very conflicted.

again ty for all who listened. i am beyond hormonal so i never know if i am over exaggerating my feelings.

will update next week for sure!! xoxoxo

Re: if you are overweight....?

no, she said that it could put me at a higher risk but nothing is set in stone. That makes me mad that they said that to you if you don't already have it. my good friend has a serious weight issue and the doctor told her not to even bother taking the glucose test. She was so offended (there were other issues) that she switched doctors and ended up passing the 1 hour test.

Re: if you are overweight....?

during my first pregnancy I was told that my risks were higher...it wasn't a foregone conclusion though.

Needless to say I didn't have complications.

Re: if you are overweight....?

My doctor never mentioned that I even had a higher risk. Although I assumed I would. I do have high bp but I honestly think I would have it even if I wasn't overweight. Before being pregnant my bp was always on the low end of normal so when it suddenly became dangerously high around 25 weeks I was really surprised. Especially since I've only gained about 18 pounds so far, so it's not like I've put on a ton of weight that could have caused the sudden bp spike. I haven't gotten the results of the GD test yet, I took it Tuesday and they said results take about a week so hopefully I'll know tomorrow or the next day.

Honestly, I would very annoyed that my doctor was making assumptions like that. Every person and every pregnancy is different and a medical professional should recognize that.

Re: if you are overweight....?

to clarify...the convo went....

doc.... are you on blood pressure medication?

me.....no...no reading has ever shown high blood pressure since pregnant

doc... well you will have it. and (definately or most likely..not sure which he said)pre eclampsia.

at that point i didnt know what to say. he mentioned bp meds every time i met him and each time i would say...no bc i do not have high readings.
this is the first time he went on to say.... well you will have high blood pressure. he never said bc i am fat...he just kept mentioning bc i am high risk and overweight.

dont know what to think.

Oh for the love of God! Yes, HE did. He made many ASSumptions during my pregnancy, most of which were wrong. Chat Icon

High BP/Pre-eclampsia and GD all have A LOT to do with placental issues and IF treaments and NOT JUST about weight. Weight doesn't help but it isn't the be all and end all.
He told me at 28 weeks I was on the verge of pre-e. Guess what? Delivered at 37 weeks and was never dx w/ pre-e, just high blood pressure. One reason I was induced was to avoid pre-e since I was full term and my Peri didn't want to risk it. And Dr. Superstar was trying to argue with her!

I swear he wanted me to develop pre-e just to say "I told you so!"

Re: if you are overweight....?

I was'nt told that..I can't believe they would say that to you. I was at least 50lbs overweight when I got pg.

They did, however, have me do the glucose test twice, once in the 2nd tri and then again in my 3rd. I also got lots of tests done and saw the ob often but they never mentioned my weight.

Interesting. I was overweight when I got PG, but nothing too crazy for my body type (I wear a 14 or 16 size in clothes).

I did end up with high blood pressure and I am on meds. I also ended up with GD. Both my doc said were contributed to many factors... one being a family history of both, two being that I am almost 40, and third, the weight.

However, I do not normally have high BP or do I have diabetes. It's all pregnancy induced.

Re: if you are overweight....?

uhhhhh... there are no definites in pregnancy... or in life. We are at a higher risk for preeclampsia if overweight before (and during) pregnancy. But for your OB to say that you "will" develop pre-e then there has to be something underlying factor (like traces of protein in your urine) that he sees that he isn't telling you... if not, then he's being douchey.

Re: if you are overweight....?

There are 2 doctors in my practice and I had no preference with them before my first pregnancy. Then I ended up having an idiot experience like that, because I saw the one doctor more often then the other and he made a lot of idiotic assumptions about my pregnancy in conjunction with my weight...

He told me from the start that I'd most likely develop gestational diabetes (which I did) and blood pressure was mentioned as well. I ended up not having any BP problems and never had preeclampsya. I did need a c-section due to the baby's large size (she was 9lbs 10 oz when born)

This pregnancy I requested the OTHER doctor and I've made so many changes to my life in the past 2 years, and I am NOT diabetic! My BP is always excellent, 102/60 was my last reading. I am eating healthy and still walking. I'd love to shove it in the other doctor's face and PROVE HIM WRONG!

I am so sorry that your doctor is a butt-head Chat Icon

Re: if you are overweight....?

I think I don't like your DR. lol As someone who is over weight that truly pisses me off. Just because you are over weight does not mean you will have high BP it depends on your physical condition. In my best shape I was still about 40lbs over weight yet played soccer 2x a week on a team and ran 5k and a triathalon. My resting heart rate is in the low 60's and my BP is typically 110/70 even now that I am heavier. Take it appointment by appointment. If your BP shows he need meds that one thing but in the mean time go for walks, bike anything that will get you moving and get your blood flowing. Even if you need to go for 2 or 3 10 min walks a day. Sorry you had that experience.

Ican't believe your dr said that to you. I am overweight and had absolutely no issues with my first pg and all is going fine with this. My dr never said anything to me like that.

Re: if you are overweight....?

No they never said I **would** get it. It was something that was mentioned that because of my weight that **could** happen. But it never has.

Re: if you are overweight....?

My doctor hasn't mentioned anything to me about these. My BP has been fine. Once or twice it was a little high but I think it was because I was worrying waiting for test results and the 2nd I was rushing to get to my appointment b/c I was late. All the other times its been fine. The doctor never said anything it was the nurse who said it was a little high but they would keep monitoring it. My doctor never said anything about my weight she just told me to keep eating normally and to remind me that I do not need to eat for 2! But never mentioned anything about GD, Pre-e or anything like that!

Re: if you are overweight....? u[pdate

in response to your update...
The thought of switching crossed my mind halfway thru my pregnancy and I'm glad that I stayed bc I am also high risk and don't want to start over with a new doc.

If you decide to stay with your OB, then just ignore his/her stupid predictions or tell them how you feel about how insensitive they are being. The doc can't medicate you for something you don't have.

ETA: The reason I wanted to switch was not bc of my OB..I was just fed up with all the waiting and trips to the hospital and all the f-ing appts with different docs and co-pays, etc.
