Summer Babies- especially those who have kids already

I'm due in August. I am really upset that my child won't be able to celebrate their birthday in school (at least not on their actual birthday, or even close to it). Celebrating my birthday in school and being with friends in school was sooooo important to me growing up. I am also a teacher and I see how important it is to the other kids and how many summer children get very upset that they never get to celebrate theirs with the class. This is something really special that they won't get. How do I handle this? Is there anything I can do? If you have a child with a summer birthday, did it bother them? I also really worry that because it is the summer and they are not in class, it will be hard to pass out invitations to a party and plus a lot of their friends will be on summer vacations and unable to attend a birthday party at all.

My dd is only one but also born in August and it does bother me. I know our elementary school allows all the kids with summer bdays tO pick a day in June to celebrate bring in cupcakes and stuff like that. I hope it won't be too upsetting for her.

My oldest DD's birthday is 9/7 and she's never celebrated her birthday in school. They celebrate half-birthdays and she's never been sad or felt she missed out--on the contrary, she gets to celebrate twice!

Also, our teachers give everyone the class list so we mail the invitations directly to the kids' homes in August for her early-September birthday...

I'm not having a summer baby, but was born in August myself. I don't really remember it bothering me. I think we were able to celebrate in June and it was fun to get to celebrate with the other summer birthday kids together - I didn't really like being center of attention so this was a plus for me.

It was hard to have to mail invites to parties over the summer though. I remember sitting with the phone book trying to gather addresses. It seems these days the school may give out a class list though so that would be helpful.

On the plus side, I loved having pool parties and even beach parties during the summer time! A friend of mine was recently thrown a surprise pool party for her birthday in July...her birthday is in the winter but she had always wanted a pool party! I'd say there are pros and cons to any birthday.

DS has a July birthday. It hasn't been an issue for us. These days there are class lists passed out with names, numbers, and e-mail addresses so sending invitations isn't difficult. As far as not having cupcakes in class, last year his teacher had all the summer birthdays pick a day in June to celebrate. But that was pre-school. Doubt they would do it in grade school. I'm not sure DS minds.

My birthday is in the summer and I have never felt sad or like I missed out on anything... My mother never made me feel that way either... I think this is a non issue that unless you put it in your kids head that they should be upset about it, I doubt they will... I had a lot of friends and not all of them I went to school with so I loved having my parties outside of school! My mom always threw the BEST parties for me and THATS what I remember! =)

You can always get addresses from the parents so when you have a party you can just mail them an invitation...

Plus I think you may be looking at this all wrong... Summer birthday's are THE BEST! There are soooo many more options for parties and things to do for summer birthdays then there are for winter ones! AND when you dont have a lot of $ to spend you can always have a great Backyard BBQ birthday as well! Instead of looking at in a negative way, look at it as a positive!

ITa. I would LOVE to have a summer birthday! Mine is in december and would always be during finals and always cold when we would go out to celebrate.

DH is born in August and I feel like we have so many more options. We did a weekend in poconos, ac, etc because the weather is so nice and most people are generally less busy it seems.

I think it's something your DC will really appreciate!

I'm due August 7th, when LO is in school, I'll just send in treats towards the end of the school year. As a teacher, I always allow summer birthdays to be celebrated! I'm actually excited for my LO to have a summer b-day b/c I'll be able to plan fun outdoor parties. My b-day is in November, and it was always too cold for anything outdoors, so I'm pretty excited for it.

my DD's bday is in August - i havent even thought of this as being a problem. honestly.

ive seen some things in the past couple of months that really made my eyes open up and realize what is really important in life. and that is our health. im just glad that i have a healthy little girl and another on the way, and i try not worry about bdays in the summer. i think there could be bigger problems in life then bdays in the summer.
i think ill alaways make cupcakes in june or sept. and always celebrate her bday at home anyway. dont see her being sad or depressed about it. and if she will i will worry about it in 5 years, not now.

;)

Re: Summer Babies- especially those who have kids already

Both my DD and DS are July babies and this being an issue never once crossed my mind. I was just excited to have healthy babies born in the nice warm weather and so far DD's two outdoor birthday parties have been awesome. I have a September birthday, and I never really celebrated it in school.
Maybe when they reach school age, I will see the issue.

As a teacher and a parent I completely understand. The kids in my class who have summer birthdays are able to pick a day in June to celebrate in school. Of course I run it by the parents first and they pick the day. As for the invites, some teachers/parents pass around a list of phone numbers, emails and even addresses of the parents in the class. This could help with that problem as well.
My daughter was born in July so I understand where you are coming from.
You can def. try these options or you can send a note to the kids that your child wants to invite asking them for their addresses.
HTH!

I couldnt agree with you more... Health is the most important thing and maybe your just lucky that you have the innocence in your pregnancy that your biggest worry is that your baby wont celebrate their birthday in school, but trust me theres a lot worse to be concerned with... Ive been through a lot in the last year and trust me the most important thing is just be happy your having a healthy pregnancy... =) These are the things to put value on... =)

Thanks so much for the idea about the half-birthday! That is a good day to send in cupcakes and let the LO get to celebrate in school, still with some meaning.

And thanks to all of the other responses, I think it can be great to have outdoor parties and I agree it can be easier and cheaper than others! =0)

DH's b-day is in July and has commented about it. Mine is in September and we usually celebrated as soon as I got back to school. I did feel bad though, I didn't get a chance to invite any new kids to my birthday party.

That being said - there's good/bad things about every month to be born! DS b-day is 12/21 and his b-day is in the shadows of Christmas. I'm working to make it special but, still, it's hard because sometimes it gets lost in there.

Re: Summer Babies- especially those who have kids already

I am a pre-k teacher and I do tend to have many summer birthdays. I usually assign each child a day in May or beginning of June and we celebrate then. I give each child their own day so it is their special day. I explain to all the other children that it is not really their birthday that day, but we wanted to celebrate all together. The children whose birthdays are in the summer are not sad in the least that its not their real birthday. My husband was born in August and he loved not being in school for his birthday because he got to spend the whole day doing what he wanted and not having to do schoolwork!

Re: Summer Babies- especially those who have kids already

Due to allergies, most schools don't even let you do this anymore anyway. Kids bring in pencils for the class which is hardly exciting.

Also, I imagine this might upset them in 1st-3rd grade but after that they'll probably be over it. Plus its a good time to teach them a lesson like yes you're disappointed, but here are the good reasons to have a summer birthday...pool parties, outdoors, beach, blah blah blah...

I've never thought of this until now actually, my LO is also due in August. I hope it won't be a problem but its also nice to know that some schools celebrate their "half birthday" so that they have a way of being included in class.

Re: Summer Babies- especially those who have kids already

I am an August baby... It never bothered me. I had parties (pool parties, outdoor parties, etc) over the summers that my friend could never have because they were born in the iffy-weather months.

Maybe spin it that way when it comes to that time??
