Breastfeeding and depression

I have been going back and forth whether to breastfeed or formula feed since i found out I was pregnant. My Dr. had told me that there has been new studies that link breastfeeding with postpartum depression and in his cases with patients it has been especially true when the woman is unsure of which to chose and isn't 100% on breastfeeding. I am leaning towards breastfeeding - but am scared of postpartum depression. Anyone hear of this before or know anything about it?? Anyone else scared?

I have read that breastfeeding reduces the risk of PPD. It's abrupt weaning and BFing complications that can lead to feelings of inadequacy and PPD. Oxytocin is a powerful antidepressant which is released when BFing. There are also meds which are compatible w/ BFing (Zoloft and Paxil).

ETA: I BF DS for a year and the only time I was slightly depressed was when he self weaned!

I think PPD is a risk regardless of BF or not.
here are some causes:
- The sudden drop in estrogen and progesterone after delivery

- Having a family history of depression or mental health issues

- No support system and therefore feeling overwhelmed by everything

- Sleep deprivation causes irritability

- The persistent noise or crying of a new baby

- A mom's changed body image

For what its worth, I used to take meds for depression and anxiety. As soon as I got pregnant, my dr had me stop taking them and I have been fine. He says when a woman becomes pregnant that often times, you no longer need medication, that you go into "mother mode". He claims that I should not need medication as long as I am breastfeeding. He has never said that breastfeeding could cause depression. I personally think the sleep deprivation and the frustration a person could have with breastfeeding if the baby won't latch, etc could contribute. I plan to take a breastfeeding class prior to baby being born and also make sure to see the lactation consultant while in the hospital to hopefully make BF easier.

Ita with the pp that it is not just BFing, the process of having a baby can throw your body off.

I recently ordered this book called "A natural guide to pregnancy and postpartum health" and I am looking forward to reading it and hopefully preventing/treating any type of imbalance I might have after I give birth.

Here is a description of the book: A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health is the first book by physicians that is devoted entirely to telling women how they can prevent postpartum problems and attain optimum health after the delivery of their babies. Elements of the program, which is meant to be adopted during-or, if possible, before-pregnancy, include diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise, hormone-balancing, the use of medicinal herbs, and conventional medications. Developed by the authors in clinical practice, this program has a proven track record in helping women to avoid and overcome postpartum difficulties.

Re: Breastfeeding and depression

from a BTDT mom:

I nursed both my kids (DS till 3mths, DD till 6mths). I def. had some hormonal issues. I am not sure it was the BF that made me crazy (although I put a lot of pressure on myself to make it work for the long haul), or the fact that I was doing everything. Nursing was fine, but I couldn't pump to save my life so when I went back to work, bf kinda stopped...when I stopped with both kids my depression got much better. Again..not sure if it was the hormones or that I wasn't under the pressure...

Re: Breastfeeding and depression

My Dr. said that the these are new findings - so it is possible I'm sure that it could've been from the breastfeeding. I found this article interesting... http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/27/us-breastfeeding-depression-idUSTRE76Q66420110727

if you google it there's a ton of different information on it now..

Re: Breastfeeding and depression

I BF both my DCs and found I only got depressed after they weaned or I stopped pumping. I found it was very helpful as I believe it to be part of the natural process of having a baby/caring for the baby, etc.

I should also add that my midwives kept a VERY close eye on me because I had a history of depression in my early 20's and was even medicated for it.

Re: Breastfeeding and depression

I have not heard this. What I did come across recently was post partum depression in women who have really want to bf but have bf'ing difficulties. I am not aware of bf'ing increasing ppd otherwise.

I am waiting for it to come in the mail. I do know it does talk a lot about breastfeeding. I just want to make sure I am 100% this time, it is so easy to only focus on the baby.

I will say I BFed DS for 14 months and it was so worth it! Any issue(s) I had was completely outweighed by the bond created between DS and I. I would not let these studies deter you from at least trying. It is what our bodies were meant to do..BFing is one of the most amazing things I have ever done. Chat Icon

Crashing, but ITA. Sleep deprivation, lack of support, hormones, leftover pain from delivery, and the idea that you're responsible for a tiny person's life can all combine to mess you up.

In my case, it was BFing that saved me. I had a lot of emotional baggage after my DD's delivery, but I felt better when I nursed my baby. It reassured me that I could take care of her.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I believe the opposite is true. BF usually enhances bonding and confidence and self-worth for mothers. Besides the countless benefits for the baby- breast milk is designed perfectly for them and is always the right temperature and amount. It also benefits women as it helps get rid of the baby weight much quicker :) I hope you give BF some more serious consideration!

ITA!! BF was not what made me depressed. It was everything else that really gave me the baby blues. You actually get a good feeling BF. Well, once you get the hang of it.
