Neighbor Problem

Not sure if there is anything we can do. New neighbors across the street and their son got a decked out Mustang. He had the car modified so it sounds like an f'in lion. Seriously, he was warming it up this morning and my DH and I had to shout at each other to hear each other. Moreover, he goes out at all times of the night and has woken my kids up with the stupid car. My DH plans on talking to the father, but we know the father thinks the car is cool so I don't have high expectations. Is there anything we can do?

Re: Neighbor Problem

Does he drive it on the street? My neighbor has a Mustang that he's modified, too. He's gotten in so much trouble already for it not being street legal and as far as I know, no one on the block lifted a finger. He sounds just like my neighbor though, but he's a nice guy so we'd never call the cops regardless.

Re: Neighbor Problem

Does your town have a noise ordinance that this kid could be in violation of, especially during the night or early morning hours ?

This!

I just don't see him modifying his car or not using it when he wants, unless he is breaking the law.

No I don't think so. There are a ton of modified cars on the road. It is very annoying, one of the neighbors kids was home from college , and I have to hear his loud car at all hours .

I think his dad would get mad at you guys if you said anything. The "kid" is probably an adult paying for his own car.

Re: Neighbor Problem

This exact thing happened to us a few years ago (young son with a Mustang). I swear he thought he could fix the car by revving the engine in the driveway. I asked nicely that he stop a few times, and when he didn't and would use our road as his personal drag strip I started calling the cops. But he was peeling out, etc in the road, which I know is illegal.

Re: Neighbor Problem

In your shoews but we are the new homeowners. We have next door with the harely and across the street with an old school hooked up mustang that has the loudest engine. We just deal with it.

Re: Neighbor Problem

If nothing works and you really can't do anything, do the passive aggressive thing and every so often, let the air out of his tires. It won't solve anything, but it'll feel reallllllly good.

This is great advice. I'm sure it won't cause any problems with the neighbors & isn't illegal at allChat Icon

Call the police non-emergency line & ask them if anything can be done. Ask them to see if the modifications are street legal.

Re: Neighbor Problem

The obvious thing to do is buy a louder, faster car, and put him in his place..... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. DH has a very loud Mustang, but we're an old married couple & he's not going out at all hours of the night lol He's very considerate with it, but that being said if someone were to complain about the noise anyway there isn't much we can do. It would just make for bad blood between the neighbors. Unfortunately, so long as it's legal nothing is going to change until either 1) the kid grows up a bit & stops driving like a tool or 2) he moves out. Sorry it's such a pain to deal with Chat Icon

This.

I also have a modified car. Specifically with Magnaflow exhaust. It ain't a quiet thing but I am considerate.

However all this street legal stuff annoys me. Most mods that annoy people ARE 100% 'Street Legal'. However I got grief over my tint way more then I did my exhaust. Ironically my tint was dealer installed and NY illegal where as my exhaust was after market and 100% legal. Go figure.

But as the cop so (not so kindly) informed me, it was my responsibility as a driver to know the law of what was and was not street legal. That said unless it was RUNNING when the cops came by I was still within my rights. Which I used OFTEN! Chat Icon

(Ironically the tint is legal here in TX so I'm glad I never removed it)

That said: here's what we paid attention to in our car club:

Regulations in New York state, “Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device.” Once again, no actual decibel limit is specified, but the regulations also expressly forbid modifying the muffler or exhaust system so that it is louder than the original system. Law enforcement officers in New York do not carry sound meters, but based on the judgment of individual officers, motorists can be cited if the noise from a vehicle exhaust can be heard clearly at a distance of 150 feet.

eta: exact wording and info: NYVTL 375-31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise. Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusaly noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped wiht a cutout, bypass, or similar device. No person shall modify the muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system above that emitted by the muffler or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with the requirements of this section.

Re: Neighbor Problem

I wanted to add that DH has gotten a ticket for a loud exhaust on his car (it's since been removed), so it is possible that his exhaust (which is probably what makes the car loud) is illegal.
