Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
My heart hurts thinking about this poor baby and the poor family whom I'm sure thought they were keeping her safe in her carseat.
Tarabelle - I have a question for you ... Would you be able to do an LIF carseat safety inspection GTG? My DH is in the auto industry and I'm sure he could sponsor it financially. We have several locations that it could be held at as well. Would anyone be interested in this? Thank you!

Nassau County has a person who checks carseats as his job every day, he is carseatsafetychris on LIF and you can call 516-571-9664 to make an appointment. He does it during the week and some random events on weekends. He is amazing, and I am grateful for him- I got into a car accident and my car was totaled, and my DD was perfectly fine. Thank you Chris!
I know Suffolk COunty has one too, I just don't know the persons info.

Re: Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
i would love this if its at a time on the weekend. I find that the one place i know that does it daily i cant make it cause im at work and i would love for my mom to come since i constantly hear that she thinks i make the straps to tight She also has my nephew every weekend so i think it would be good for her. I have gotten my seat installed for me and DH but we have to remove DH car seat, its the one we will use for other cars. I am still not 100% comfortable with installing it either!

What accident? Was it in the news?
A SUV was traveling south on N. Ocean Ave yesterday afternoon during the rain and flipped over. The 15- month old child was not securely fastened in her car seat, was ejected from the car and killed. The grandmother was driving and has been charged with numerous violations and felonies pending. The mother was a passenger in the car. The two adults walked away unscathed.

I really wish I coudl know what they mean by not securley fastened? Was the seat not installed properly? Were the straps not tight enough? Was she not buckled? I mean to be ejected- I would assume it would have to be a pretty blatant mistake- but I don't know. And it's scaring the shyt out of me to be honest.

Re: Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
I have read a couple of different articles at this point. I actually live right down the road and my DH past it yesterday on his way home. I have a feeling that the baby was probably in a regular carseat, but facing forward instead of rear facing, plus if the straps weren't tight enough. It said that the carseat was buckled into the car. That road is crazy, especially in bad weather. It looks like the grandmother is at fault too for not having a license and insurance. The whole situation just sucks.

Re: Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
I want to know if the baby was KNOWINGLY not belted properly, or if the Mom thought she was buckled properly, but in the end was not. VERY scary!

Re: Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
The reports of the accident I've read state the seat was installed, but the child was not properly restrained in the seat. They didn't say she was UNrestrained, which leads me to believe that they didn't have the straps tightened properly. Maybe they had the harness under the arms, maybe they didn't bother doing the cr()tch bucke, maybe the straps were super loose. We won't know that unless mom/grandma tells us.
What I CAN tell you as this was preventable, sadly.
The mother and grandmother of the girl BOTH survived with minor injuries. Properly restrained, this girl would have likely survived.
I am currently in the process of moving, but once that is done I will have some more time.
Chris and I have discussed putting together a comprehensive FAQ/Bible for carseats for everyone here, but I think we've both been crazily busy. So that will be done.
I am always around and do what I can to help out.
I'd love to do a carseat check, but it can be tough. I may be able to finagle something and a tech or two to help out. We can definitely keep that idea on the table. Maybe at the next LIF event I can be there in a formal capacity if that is wanted (someone page TPTB for that one)

Re: Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
I also noticed in the article that it stated that the grandmother was given a summons for not having child restraints for a child under 4 years old so I wonder if they had her in a booster maybe?? So sad though.

Re: Tarabelle99 Carseat Safety -- spinoff to tragic accident
From what I understand the child was in the wrong kind of seat for her age-it sounds like she may have been in a seat designed for a 4+ yr old
