12 month bloodwork

I recently went to get bloodwork done for my DD and what a horrible experience! I had to strap her down while she was kicking and screaming and the nurse tried to get blood out of her but nothing came out. It was horrible.....I felt soo bad for my DD. Now I have to go back again because attempt #1 was unsuccessful. There just has to be a better way to get blood!

Anyone else have a similar experience?

This is why I never went.
I just don't see the urgency of putting a healthy baby through this.
I just can't do it....

I know our DDs are almost the same age-17 months so I thought I was behind. I attempted last weekend but I can't put her through that again....they just couldn't get any blood out of her!

Also did you collect her urine...because that's part of the whole 12 month process?

Dr didn't mention anything about urine to me.
But I can tell you, I'm not collecting urine.
This is ridiculous. They are 1 year old. Collecting urine? Get out of here.
I feel like half these tests are just money makers.

It is sooo hard collecting her urine. They give you like a bag to put in her diaper but it just always comes out. I just can't...glad I am not the only one!

What on earth are they testing the urine for? A UTI?
Sounds ridiculous to me.
I'll pass on that one.

I didn't have to collect urine but, I also didn't have a bad experience.

The anticipation was a lot worse than the actual blood draw. DS was better than I thought he'd be and didnt' squirm too much.

I think they do it again at 2 and I'm more concerned about that since he's more wary of strangers now than he was.

ETA - We had it done at our local Quest. Could you attempt going to a different place?

I wish I had the same experience you did...my DD was kicking and screaming. The nurse attempted to get it..I just wanted to get it over with but no blood came out. Maybe I will try going somewhere else. I just feel so bad putting her through that again.

Re: 12 month bloodwork

I had dd 12 month well visit 2 weeks ago, they just took blood from her finger & tested it for lead poising & to see if shes anemic, in the office they didnt say anything about having to go and get any other blood work done. Im hoping thats all they needed sine they both came back negitive. It wasnt all that bad they had two nurses come in I held dd one nurse held her arm n hand and the other nurse took the blood lasted all of 3mins maybe.

so they took blood from her finger?? I would have preferred that. Not this place-I had to strap her down and they took it from her arm..like they do with adults.

I had the same thing done at DS's ped. Only difference was he was 10 months old when they did it. They said nothing at his one year check up about any other bloodwork.

Re: 12 month bloodwork

Our ped gave me a script to go to the lab to have it done before her 1 yr well visit.
I called labcorp and the recording recommends making an appt.

Did you just go to the lab or make an appt in advance?

I strongly recommend going to a lab at a hospital. IMO, they have a ton more experience with children than say a Quest.

Re: 12 month bloodwork

I wanted to stall the test too... and then my ped started asking questions about my house. Is it a new house? No... Do I have exposed radiators? Yes. SHE felt very uncomfortable delaying the test... she was most concerned about DS inhaling bits of lead paint in dust.

My ped's office took the blood. Of course, they asked about my insurance coverage first... I guess it was good enough. It was a finger prick. DS was more upset about having his hand held. Drop by drop... blood into the tube. No problems. Looking in his ears is MUCH worse.

As for the urine collection: that was nothing at all. I held DS by some running water & the bag filled up. Not harmful... I didn't even ask why they did it.
