I need Christening gift help...I'm the Godmother!

I'll admit that I'm not the best Christian Chat Icon and don't really know what's "proper". DH and I are about to become Godparents to a good friend's DD.

Two questions:

1. Is there a "customary" gift that we're supposed to buy...like a cross necklace?

2. Our soon-to-be goddaughter is a twin...we will not be the other baby's godparents. Should we give the other baby the same gift, or should we give our goddaughter something in addition?

ETA question #3. What would be a better gift for a christening...would you do cash, or maybe a savings bond?

I'm SO not good at this...any and all help would be appreciated Chat Icon

I have two godchildren, for both I bought the outfit. DH has three and he has always bought their crosses (necklaces). I think it's pretty customary for the godmother to buy the outfit and the godfather to buy the cross.

I asked about the christening gown, and as it turns out, my friend's MIL is making the dresses for the girls. Do you think there's anything else I could buy for her?

If she is making the dresses then I would get maybe a bracelet and cash. I am not a fan of bonds.

Normally it's the christening gown but I saw your post that the gowns are getting made. We were just the Godparents for my friend's baby and we bought her a diamond cross and gave a check.

To answer your question re: cash v. bonds. I always gave savings bonds but I just got a few for my DS's christening and they are kind of a PITA. I would say do cash.

As for the twin situation, I don't know. Maybe give both the same amount of $ and then get your godchild either the cross or some other special gift?

We bought ours a diamond cross and I also bought some accessories for the outfit; I believe I bought the cross bib and maybe a special blanket.

1. The god parents are "typically" supposed to get: the cross, the baby's outfit, a christening blanket & sometimes pay/make a donation to the church. DH and I were god parents twice & we did all of this... so we did not give a gift.

2. Interesting... usually the church does not allow the break-up of twins or triplets (there was family drama over this one). I'd say it depends on what you are going to give.

3. DEFINITELY cash. I hate getting things like bonds. I don't know where any of the bonds are from my childhood. Cash is easier to put into a bank account for the kid IMO. With gifts & a large part of my pay check each month, our Chat Icon has quite the savings account already! Higher than ours! Chat Icon

You can also get a nice outfit for the baby to wear after the cermony. When I was my nephews Godmother I bought him the gown and outfit for after. My DS wore the same gown cause we want it to be a tradition so my sister (DS's Godmother( bought his outfit for the party and gave him a check also)
DH's brother ( Godfather) gave him a cross and check
