My very humble (and undeducatedChat Icon )opinion is that I think it is time for OWS to morph into something else as it's become simply a nuisance, the message is not as strong and the coverage/ discussions worldwide are dying down. I'm in support of the overall movement, and they need to revamp their approach. Hats off to Bloomie for kicking them in the pants!

Statement from Council Members Jimmy Van Bramer, Gale Brewer, Daniel Dromm, Letitia James, Brad Lander, Steve Levin, Melissa Mark-Viverito, Rosie Mendez, Annabel Palma, Deborah Rose, James Sanders, Jumaane Williams on the Eviction of Occupy Wall Street

We, the undersigned members of the New York City Council, are dismayed by the late night eviction of the occupation of Wall Street. We condemn the... violation of the First Amendment rights of the protesters. It is shameful to use the cover of darkness to trample on civil liberties without fear of media scrutiny or a public response. We are proud to be a part of the movement for economic and social justice and shared sacrifice sparked by Occupy Wall Street. We commend Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams, who demonstrated their solidarity by standing with protesters at Zuccotti Park last night. In the aftermath of the eviction, we reiterate our support and look toward the future.

We know that the fight is far from over, and that last night’s events will only fuel the fire for change. We will march to hold the banks accountable and call for a fairer economy on November 17 and beyond.

I agree with all of this, especially the part about it being shameful that they did it under the cover of darkness.

I think it was GENIUS to do this in the middle of the night. It prevented a lot of chaos, and rioting that other states encountered.

We can agree to disagree. I've heard reports of:

* occupants being told they'd be allowed collect their belongings, which were then thrown into dumpsters with the garbage
* the press being pushed out of the park and "roughed up"
* arrests
* teargas
* over 5000 books from the OWS library thrown away
* a sound cannon deployed (unconfirmed)
* an NYC council member assaulted by the cops

Personally, I don't think any of those things are justifiable responses to a peaceful protest, and I stand by my statement that it was shameful.

and how would you like them to have cleared the park?????? ask in a nice quiet little way??? how else can you clear that many people, that many things as quickly and EFFECTIVELY as possible? no one was hurt or killed. when you go out an do something like that and bring your precious belongings i think you can expect they might get taken or lost. it's a risk. and it was not a peaceful protest anymore when it was disrupting HARD WORKING business owners and people who PAY to live there in relative safety and peace.

ETA i was there and a lot of the people there would NEVER ever would have left unless some sort of "force" was used... those cops have to protect themselves to some degree too when undertaking a job like that.

It's a fundamental disagreement. No matter what the circumstances, I don't think that non-violence should ever be met with violence. If those people were trying to hurt the police, I would understand. But to spray people with pepper stray, take their belongings, destroy their books, physically assault them, and arrest them for peaceful protest just doesn't compute for me. I fully understand that there are other points of view, and I respect them.

If an area is occupied for that length of time, there will be major problems regarding cleanliness, hygiene, smells, safety etc. It had nothing to do with the movement, it is just a practical fact.

This. Also if you haven't been down there yourself you have no clue how disgusting it is. I work not too far from there and get skeeved out just walking around there. Sorry but a lot of those protesters look dirty and top that with the fact they are sleeping on top of each other with no place to shower or go to the bathroom. Its unsanitary plain and simple. I see it with my own eyes.

There are literally thousands of workers and tourists in that area every day. Germs and diseases spread quickly. It's not fair to them to be exposed to germs, nastiness and horrid smells.

Also what is their point now? At this stage in the game all they are doing is getting free meals and destroying a public park. They are NOT making a change and IMO their original purpose is now overshadowed by the filth and crime going on down there. Not a great way to make a point. Not to mention all the $$ being spent for police and OT to keep the area orderly.

Non-violence? Apparently their were a lot of crimes commited by the OWS protesters against other protesters...do you really think they care about the police, sanitation workers or others trying to get them out of the park? I don't think so.
From what I read the ones that took their belongings and left peacefully were not arrested or mishandled because they obeyed. They don't pay rent to occupy that park, it's not their house so if they give an order to go you go. And sorry but if the police tell you to pack your ish and go or face being arrested and you choose not to go and get arrested thats on you.

Re: OWS protesters evicted last night

Wait until tomorrow. They are threatening to shut down Wall Street and the subways. This is getting ugly. I personally do not agree with all of this protesting. Have an organized march ONE day to make a statement. Don't squat in a park indefinitely to try and be heard. This has potential for death and riots.

I agree with this.
They really aren't helping the cause anymore. They are just making people resent them. Not good for their cause.

And this is costing the city MILLIONS. The OT for the cops ALONE is out of control.

http://occupywallst.org/action/november-17th/

On Thursday November 17th, the two month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, we call upon the 99% to participate in a national day of direct action and celebration!
New York City
BREAKFAST: Shut Down Wall Street - 7:00 a.m.

Enough of this economy that exploits and divides us. It's time we put an end to Wall Street's reign of terror and begin building an economy that works for all. We will gather in Liberty Square at 7:00 a.m., before the ring of the Trading Floor Bell, to prepare to confront Wall Street with the stories of people on the frontlines of economic injustice. There, before the Stock Exchange, we will exchange stories rather than stocks.
LUNCH: Occupy The Subways - 3:00 p.m.

We will start by Occupying Our Blocks! Then throughout the five boroughs, we will gather at 16 central subway hubs and take our own stories to the trains, using the "People's Mic".

Bronx
Fordham Rd
3rd Ave, 138th Street
163rd and Southern Blvd
161st and River - Yankee Stadium
Brooklyn
Broadway Junction
Borough Hall
301 Grove Street
St Jose Patron Church,185 Suydam St, Bushwick
Queens
Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Ave.
Jamaica Center/Parsons/Archer
92-10 Roosevelt Avenue, Jackson Heights
Manhattan
125th St. A,B,C,D
Union Sq. (Mass student strike)
23rd St and 8th Ave
Staten Island
St. George, Staten Island Ferry Terminal
479 Port Richmond Avenue, Port Richmond

DINNER: Take The Square - 5:00 p.m.

At 5 pm, tens of thousands of people will gather at Foley Square (just across from City Hall) in solidarity with laborers demanding jobs to rebuild this country's infrastructure and economy. A gospel choir and a marching band will also be performing.

Afterwards we will march to our bridges. Let's make it as musical a march as possible - bring your songs, your voice, your spirit! Our "Musical" on the bridge will culminate in a festival of light as we mark the two-month anniversary of the #occupy movement, and our commitment to shining light into our broken economic and political system.

Resist austerity. Rebuild the economy. Reclaim our democracy.

My DH and other friends have had to work shifts down there and he is my "independent news source" and every time he goes there he wants to bathe in purrell. The absolute STENCH is overpowering from some people who haven't showered in weeks. As well the OWS protestors, for the most part, had no bathrooms and yes they have been crapping and pissing in plastic bags and just throwing them in garbages that are overflowing as it is.

I agree that they have every right to protest and I don't care if they are protesting Wall Street or the extinction of rare red pandas....but I am just addressing what people I know who have been there have witnessed.

Agreed. DH is there now and has been there many, many times. He said it STINKS! and comes home and showers for an hour. There's feces, urine and needles on the floor.

Tomorrow sounds like a good overtime night for DH.

Does OWS understand how much money it costs to pay the cops? DH works for 24 hours straight some nights. This is costing the city millions of dollars, shutting down privately owned businesses near the park, and doing a lot of harm. So far nothing good has come from this. Its time to call it quits, and come up with Plan B. I agree with a nice march to make your point, but becomming a squatter does not prove anything.

I think we can all agree that corporate greed is ridiculous. We know many corporations are getting tax breaks for stuff they shouldn't. We as citizens needs to vote to change policy.

I also work down there, a block away. I have to say that for them to be "for" small business, they are doing a lot to hurt them and let's not forget the VANDALISM they have caused to these small businesses. And it doesn't end at Wall Street, it's in every Occupy city. And how does shutting Wall Street down or the subway help? Occupying the subway HURTS the 99%!!!!!Chat Icon

ITA. My coworker was talking to the employees at the payless around the corner from Zucotti park and they were telling her that they find human feces and vomit in front of the store almost every morning before opening up. And THEY have to be the one to clean it up before the store opens to the public. I'm pretty sure that those employees are not making 6 figure salaries and are the hard working people that these protesters claim to be representing.

Ugh, i know some of them are really trying to make a change but sorry, i think a bunch of them are a$$holes looking for a party.

Re: OWS protesters evicted last night

Not only was it dirty, disgusting, unsanitary, unsafe (fire hazards), but many women were getting sexually abused (there have been plenty of arrests due to this, many people stealing from each other! Ipads, phones, cameras, etc. It was time it got cleaned up. The message was being lost due to free loaders. Yes, I know all this personally. I've worked there plenty (NYPD), and not being biased just because I'm law enforcement. I'm generally open minded and started off on their side, until it became something other than what it wasn't supposed to be.

Depending on the day, I either agree with this whole OWS thing or some days I see it from the opposite side and completely disagree with what they're doing. I tend to suffer from seeing both sides too well. But it doesn't matter whether I agree or disagree with what's going on down there because if there's one thing I know, it's that social change and a shift in our country/government has never come from clean, neat, polite protests. So it just might be that things have to get ugly before they get better.
Is it right? Probably not. Is it reality? Yes.

Okk i'm sorry but while i'm all for getting noticed every report I have seen of the OWS is gross. People are destroying parks, urinating, defication, and leaving trash everywhere, police are cleaning up needles, and people say the smell is horrible. HOW is this making a point other then the 99% are filthy gross people? This is not a group of people doing anything but being embarrising so even though I support the idea I am soooooo against what is happening. Just because i'm "poor" doesn't mean i'm gross or a slob. Sorry I just needed to vent about this.

With all due respect, I don't know where you guys are all getting your information from. Perhaps crap tabloids like the Post or Daily News? In actuality, many of the protesters, who have every right to be there, have formed cleaning crews and organized schedules and duties that take full responsibility for the cleanliness and sanitary state of the park. I'm SURE there are areas and issues that need to be taken care of- but painting the protesters with such broad strokes of being filthy animals is downright disgraceful and JUDGEMENTAL. Mainstream media might be skewing things a bit- but that doesn't mean you have to buy into it.

Please refer to more independent news sources for less biased information, ie NPR, NY Times, Guardian, truthout, pew research center, fair.org, etc. Some are more leftist of course- but someone needs to make up for the obnoxious mainstream reporting elsewhere.

Sometimes social change can be a touch messy or disorderly. But "Well-behaved women rarely make history"

Really? This looks clean.

I would like to know what the difference is between these protestors and the homeless man down the street NOT holding a sign getting pushed along and told they can't sleep on such and such of street or in that doorway. Because honestly, from what I've seen on the news, take away their signs and I don't see a difference.

I love and agree with much about what you are saying but I too think it's time for something different. Someone said they were getting free food...are they? How? I'd think some smll business would benefit from these protesters buying food.

Milk Street Cafe had to lay off 21 people and changed their closing hours from 9:00 PM to 3:30 PM due to a drop in business caused by the mess at the park - barricades and the overall situation kept customers away. I'm sure those 21 people are grateful to the OWS folks for getting them on the unemployment line.

I am interested to see what happens today with this supposed "Day of Disruption".
