Re: OWS protesters evicted last night

I heard it on the radio. I also passed Foley Square on my way in and saw a bunch of protesters over there.

I support the freedom of speech and the protesters message. But I also support local businesses in the area and feel for those that were affected. I work in lower Manhattan and have only gone past Zucotti Park once or twice. The filth and smell was pretty awful. I could definitely see how stores lost some business since I would avoid the area like the plague. I think the city did what they had to do at this point. Also, if I heard correctly, they are letting them return to the park but they cannot bring the tents or sleeping bags. Hopefully there can be some kind of happy medium....but probably not Chat Icon

Re: OWS protesters evicted last night

Okk i'm sorry but while i'm all for getting noticed every report I have seen of the OWS is gross. People are destroying parks, urinating, defication, and leaving trash everywhere, police are cleaning up needles, and people say the smell is horrible. HOW is this making a point other then the 99% are filthy gross people? This is not a group of people doing anything but being embarrising so even though I support the idea I am soooooo against what is happening. Just because i'm "poor" doesn't mean i'm gross or a slob. Sorry I just needed to vent about this.

Court order allows Occupy Wall St. protesters back

(11/15/11) NEW YORK (AP) - The National Lawyers Guild says it has obtained a court that allows Occupy Wall St. protesters to return with tents to a New York City park.

The guild says the injunction prevents the city from enforcing park rules on Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city knew about the court order but has not seen it. He says the city plans to go court immediately.

Zuccotti Park was cleared overnight so that crews could clean it. Bloomberg says that was done "to reduce the risk of confrontation."

He says the city had planned to allow the protesters back in the park after it was cleaned. Under the city's plans, protesters would not be allowed to use tents, sleeping bags, or tarps and would have to follow all park rules.

With all due respect, I don't know where you guys are all getting your information from. Perhaps crap tabloids like the Post or Daily News? In actuality, many of the protesters, who have every right to be there, have formed cleaning crews and organized schedules and duties that take full responsibility for the cleanliness and sanitary state of the park. I'm SURE there are areas and issues that need to be taken care of- but painting the protesters with such broad strokes of being filthy animals is downright disgraceful and JUDGEMENTAL. Mainstream media might be skewing things a bit- but that doesn't mean you have to buy into it.

Please refer to more independent news sources for less biased information, ie NPR, NY Times, Guardian, truthout, pew research center, fair.org, etc. Some are more leftist of course- but someone needs to make up for the obnoxious mainstream reporting elsewhere.

They really LOOK like they are very clean and orderly too...Chat Icon Chat Icon And the Mayor also said that this was also b/c a First Responder (EMT?) was injured by the protestors recently while trying to make their way through the park to help a mentally ill man...So not only was an act of violence committed, the park was such a mess there was not even a clear path for First Responders to get in to help. Plus all the tents and tarps were a fire hazard with all the cooking going on too. I say to the mayor that is was about time!

And I Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon about the NYTimes being less biased.

My DH and other friends have had to work shifts down there and he is my "independent news source" and every time he goes there he wants to bathe in purrell. The absolute STENCH is overpowering from some people who haven't showered in weeks. As well the OWS protestors, for the most part, had no bathrooms and yes they have been crapping and pissing in plastic bags and just throwing them in garbages that are overflowing as it is.

I agree that they have every right to protest and I don't care if they are protesting Wall Street or the extinction of rare red pandas....but I am just addressing what people I know who have been there have witnessed.

You are correct making a general statement is wrong I apologize, and I know people are creating cleaning teams to make it better, but my point is WHY should anybody HAVE TO create a team to do this? Isn't it common sense to use the restroom to relieve yourself? Isn't it common sense to throw your trash away? These are people showing up to be OUR voice. Is this really what you want representing you? Even if I wanted to go to a movement this is so awful why would I do that? It's such a slap in the face to the people honestly trying to make a change and who are trying to get noticed. The movement is being overshadowed by just deplorable and disgusting conditions. I did watch an interview on CNN and the person, I don't remember who, had said they are not against the protesting, but to have open needles, medications, rotting food, feces, and other hazzords just can't be tolorated. How can you arguee with that?

And I Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon about the NYTimes being less biased.

I too am laughing at the remark of the NYT being less biased. Of course NYT is (some would say arguably, not I) left leaning (as I acknowledged). =)

I am just aggravated with the movement getting such a bad rap, with people (not necessarily you guys) making judgement based on 2-minute sound bytes or Bill O'Reilly's rantings or crappy journalism and slanted reporting. Again, not necessarily you guys, but out here in the suburbs, I just come across too many people who characterize the whole movement as dirty hippies with an attitude problem, prone to filthiness, violence, etc etc. I just feel like the message is getting lost with all the reports of crime, rape, unsanitary conditions, etc. Of COURSE these negative conditions DO exist- but its just like people/reporters/ media to focus on the negative. Its what sells papers, I know this. Take ANY large gathering of people- from music festivals to political gatherings to sporting events to college festivities- and there are going to ALWAYS be some shady elements or bad apples who give it all a bad name.

On a final note, I would like to say that I HAVE NOT been down to Zucatti Park, not even ONCE, since Sept 17, the start of the protesting. I would have LOVED to have been down there, and if I was physically able to, I would be there in a heartbeat to make my own assessment of the cleanliness or lack thereof. I am, however, 38+ weeks pregnant. I TRIED to go down there last month as I have a lot of friends down there who are activists- and at numerous other outposts of the national campaign- but I am having a difficult pregnancy and walkng more than a block at a time just isn't an option for me. I DO think its sorta lame for me to have such a strong opinions about conditions I have not witnessed firsthand! But as a long-time activist/ political nerd/ news junkie (and sociology major whose concentration was in social change, revolution and human rights) I have been watching this all go down with great interest and can't help but form an opinion.

I believe EVERY SINGLE COMMENT you have all made seeing it firsthand (or secondhand, like through your hubby) that it is smelly and whatnot. I believe that there are parts of the area that are GROSS. But I also have to balance that with all my friends who I'm talking to on the phone or emailing with or reading their blogs and whatnot, who are down there telling me disparaging stories. I guess its like asking a hundred people about a crime they witnessed and getting a hundred different versions. Moral of the story, I just feel that the issue of cleanliness is too easily a scapegoat for NYC gov't to kick everyone out of the park. Its frustrating that one of the most significant protests in recent history that has reached critical mass and galvanized a nation might be shut down on such trite grounds. Now maybe if I still lived in the city- or especially if I lived/worked in the ZP neighborhood- I might feel differently, suffering from a case of NIMBY (not in my backyard). But as for now, I stand behind the freedom to demonstrate and do hope any deplorable conditions will be improved.

My very humble (and undeducatedChat Icon )opinion is that I think it is time for OWS to morph into something else as it's become simply a nuisance, the message is not as strong and the coverage/ discussions worldwide are dying down. I'm in support of the overall movement, and they need to revamp their approach. Hats off to Bloomie for kicking them in the pants!

Statement from Council Members Jimmy Van Bramer, Gale Brewer, Daniel Dromm, Letitia James, Brad Lander, Steve Levin, Melissa Mark-Viverito, Rosie Mendez, Annabel Palma, Deborah Rose, James Sanders, Jumaane Williams on the Eviction of Occupy Wall Street

We, the undersigned members of the New York City Council, are dismayed by the late night eviction of the occupation of Wall Street. We condemn the... violation of the First Amendment rights of the protesters. It is shameful to use the cover of darkness to trample on civil liberties without fear of media scrutiny or a public response. We are proud to be a part of the movement for economic and social justice and shared sacrifice sparked by Occupy Wall Street. We commend Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams, who demonstrated their solidarity by standing with protesters at Zuccotti Park last night. In the aftermath of the eviction, we reiterate our support and look toward the future.

We know that the fight is far from over, and that last night’s events will only fuel the fire for change. We will march to hold the banks accountable and call for a fairer economy on November 17 and beyond.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't zuccotti park private property? i thought the park owners said enough is enough and bloomberg agreed?

and with all due respect to the city council, what about the rights of the business owners and residents? guess if you don't have a bullhorn and a drum your rights dont count.

can you imagine if it was across from where YOU lived?? holy moses.

Re: OWS protesters evicted last night

If an area is occupied for that length of time, there will be major problems regarding cleanliness, hygiene, smells, safety etc. It had nothing to do with the movement, it is just a practical fact.

my DH works right there and it's getting ridiculous. yup he works his *** off on Wall street and we don't live like kings. we just work. i wish i had the time to just hang out there and hold a sign and flop around to the loud drums and play music. yeah realllllly productive.Chat Icon

oh and while i DO believe there was a good intention in the beginning of these protests it has lost it's meaning and is nothing more than a nuisance at this point.

Re: OWS protesters evicted last night

Been there. Not pretty.

I respect their first amendment rights but when do your rights supercede mine? When your right to assembly affects others negatively it's time to pack up your toys and go home or find another way to protest to get your point across.

If this was happening right outside my home I'm not sure I would be so understanding. People who work and live in that area are dealing with a public nuisance and unsanitary conditions.

If people are cleaning up after themselves they are few and far between.

There are no public restrooms. Local businesses do not have to allow public access to private bathrooms. Considering their businesses are suffering, I wouldn't be understanding either.

I agree with all of this, especially the part about it being shameful that they did it under the cover of darkness.
