How to be successful at EBF?

DS wouldn't latch and when he did he would fall alseep and kick it out. I went to an LC yesterday and we finally found the trick to get him to latch and he BF'd for an hour and when I got home I got him on for about 40 minutes. This morning we are having issues getting him to stay on again, when we wakes from his nap I will try again but formula is expensive and was hoping to EBF, how can I be successful at it? What are some of the things that are helpful or that I NEED to do?

Time and patience. Just go with the flow and don't get too worked up about it. Let him tell you when he is hungry, feed him when he wants it...

Thats my advice! Good luck and congratulations!

I was going to give the same exact advice!

And - know it will get easier. The first month or so is the hardest!!

Re: How to be successful at EBF?

Relaxing, for me that was a key thing. the more relaxed I was the better DS latched. I would try to be conscious of breathing deeply. It might sound hokey but I really feel it helped. Even when he was hysterical I would try to remain calm. I would walk around and nurse him and that was helpful for him to latch. He was distracted by the things around him and he naturally began latching better. Taking a bath together is a way to relax and have a good latch occur too.

I never even thought of using formula, I was determined to BF. That helped me get over the hurdles. I had to figure it out b/c to me formula was not an option.

Good luck, you can do it!!!

How old is your DS?? Have you tried a nipple shield?

It took us about 2 weeks for DD to actually latch on her own, without a nipple shield. She would cry at the breast all the time that first week, she would fall asleep during feedings and I tried all the little tricks to wake her, most of the time it was a bust. But then one day she just latched and it has been pretty great ever since.

Do you have the my brestfriend? I found it SO much better than the Boppy.

What kind of hold are you using?

ETA: DD was jaundiced and the hospital Ped said to give her formula, we did it for a day and a half, after bf sessions, and the second day she wouldn't even latch with the nipple shield. She was 4 days old and it didn't feel right to me, so I ditched the formula. I think if I had kept with the formula bf wouldn't have worked for us at all, the formula/bottle is just SO easy for them in the beginning, I think it competes with bf.

When we went to our Ped the next day for a jaundice check he said no formula, only bf for the first few weeks if you want to bf. I wanted to strangle him at the time, but his advice worked really well for us! DD is almost 10 weeks and we are EBF.

Everything she said!!! To me formula was never, ever an option (for personal reasons), so I didn't have a choice. I had to make it work.

Also, I wouldn't wait for DS to get really hungry, because we had latch issues in the beginning. If he got too hungry he would just get hysterical and it would compound the problem. What I would do every single time was gentle pull his chin down with my thumb with every latch to get him to open his mouth wider to latch properly. If he didn't latch properly, I would take him off and do it again until it was right. Within about 3 weeks he was latching perfectly again and it was easy breezy (well, almost) from there. Good luck!!!

I have gotten him to latch but DS likes his meal fast and when he latches and milk isn't rushing out he gets upset and detaches. We just got him to latch yesterday but today he is being a little more difficult about it, I have noticed I am leaking wuite a bit more since he latched and fed yesterday. I hav just been using a fluffy pillow and not my Boppy. I found him latching better with a pillow than the Boppy.

He probably just needs to get used to your flow. I'm sure that the more you get him on, the better he'll get. He's still so little!!!

Re: How to be successful at EBF?

DD is 7 days old and has had a really hard time latching from day one. She would latch incorrectly most of the time and was really hurting me. I starting pumping and feeding her the bottle and 2 days later (when my nipples healed up) tried breastfeeding again and she did great. I don't know if it was just her getting used to sucking better or the bottles helped teach her but it seemed to work for me. Now we're doing both bottle and breast so DH can bond with her too. He's loving his time with her. Chat Icon

Taryn, can you feel your let down yet? Maybe like you said, he is getting frustrated because he wants his meal fast if your let down isn't coming fast. A way around that in the beginning would be to pump till you feel your let down and then put him on the breast or massage your breasts before nursing. It's called slow ejection reflex and can be caused by stress.

Let-down? what does that feel like? When he latches I can feel him suck out the milk...is that let-down? (sorry if that is a stupid question Chat Icon )

When he cries or when I pick him up my nips will start to ache a little and then I start leaking all over before I can get him on, is that let-down?

Yes, that is let down (the burning ache you feel before your milk starts to flow). Hmmm, so maybe that isn't the issue Chat Icon
