The heads/feet are chopped out of all my digital prints!
I haven't ordered prints from snapfish, shutterfly etc for along time, but had a coupon, so decided to make an album for my Mom (an actual old fashioned album, not the kind you design on your own.)
When i received my pictures at least 7 of them were cut off at the top or the bottom.
I complained and the 1st company told me to give them the print numbers etc and they would look into it.
So I reordered from a different company, checked the pictures VERY carefully to make sure that it wasn't my fault and sent my order.
Well, I got my photos today and it happened again--only this time it's worse! An 8x10 of my daughter has her entire head cut off! It's awful! And creepy!
I know they offer this new service for digital prints, and I did order a batch ion the new, smaller size, but they don't fit in frames and aren't what I want.
What's going on? Any tips?
Sorry so long. This turned out to be kind of a vent.

Usually they'll give you a warning before you check out, and ask you to confirm the print size.
It happens with digital cameras and either you have to choose your prints slightly smaller (it's like 3.something by 5.something) or 4x6, in which case they may be chopped (but at least they'll fit in standard frames lol).

Re: The heads/feet are chopped out of all my digital prints!
The dimensions created by the less expensive digital cameras are not the same as older "full frame" film cameras or some of professional digital cameras (think $3000 and up price range). Most places crop them to fit the traditional frame sizes but if the subject is near the edge it gets cut off. I think many of the printers have the option to choose "do not crop" but then you end up with white space and have to have a custom matt made, or trimi ti down yourself. The best options are to either choose "do not crop" and purchase a frame online that fits the digital dimensions, or use a program (like photoshop elements) that lets you choose where to crop to a standard 8 x 10 size.

It's because the images aren't cropped to the correct ratios....

Re: The heads/feet are chopped out of all my digital prints!
I have another question: If I use my dslr will it prevent this issue? I hate lugging it around, but if the photo quality is going to suffer with my point and shoot (nit a fancy/nice one at all) then I will!

It depends on what DSLR you have, but it probably won't solve the problem. You need a full frame DSLR like a Canon 5D Mark II. If you're shooting with a Rebel or similar Nikon it's not a full frame camera. As previously mentioned, most full frame cameras are considered professional level and cost $3000 (as a starting point, going way up from there) so if you paid a lot less than that it's very unlikely that it's full frame.
The solution is to not zoom in as close so there is room to crop without trimming off heads and feet, or select the option to not crop when printing and work around the size differences on the framing end.
If you search Google for Crop Factor you'll find some sites that explain it and your manual will tell you what type of sensor your cameras have.

Thank you for this explanation! It makes a lot of sense. If you search Google for Crop Factor you'll find some sites that explain it and your manual will tell you what type of sensor your cameras have.

Would you happen to know where frames of this size are sold??

Re: The heads/feet are chopped out of all my digital prints!
you need to step back when shooting and leave more room for when you order prints. Most places you select to print have a preview option or should show you where it will crop and usually let's you select where to crop.
Many photographers shoot with more room around because they know most clients order standard print sizes. I am not talking about the subject swimming in the background just two steps back.

Thanks. This is good advice! I think I do get too close to the subject.

I think I've seen a few at Michael's or AC Moore but they still tend to the old standard sizes. PictureFrames.com has just about any size you want to get. If you select a frame style it takes you to a page that lets you select single or double matt options and you can even upload your photo to see how it looks in the frame.

Re: The heads/feet are chopped out of all my digital prints!
when i order pics from walgreens there is always a warning to do the true digital size which is smaller than 4 x 6 or to crop to a 4 x 6 which at times has left me with clipped heads or clipped bottoms.

Re: The heads/feet are chopped out of all my digital prints!
I ALWAYS shoot a little wide for this reason. You can always crop, but you can't add.
I really don't have this problem though, and my DSLR is a crop sensor camera. Are YOU cropping the photos beforehand in your software? Most software (Picasa is great for basic stuff like this) has an option to crop to the dimensions of a certain print size. I would try doing that with your photos BEFORE uploading them to the printer's site.

I've only seen that happen when the resolution isn't high enough for a larger print size, not because of dimensions
