Too many toys .. kind of a spnioff to clutter post

DS has way too many toys for the little space designated to him. Little by little, its accumulated and its gotten to the point where I can't stand it.

I need to throw out/donate, but I cannot decide what goes, if I use the in the past week what did he play with rule. He played with every single item. So he hasn't outgrown anything.

I would hide some toys one week and take others out and cycle them. But I'm running out of room to hide them!

Help any suggestions? we're drowning in toys.

Definitely don't throw them away if there's still life in them.

Why not just have a yard sale or freecycle or donate the ones that you don't need anymore to a local charity such as a church?

I tried, but I organized all the toys, stared at them for 2 hours and couldn't decide what goes and what stays. Chat Icon

There has to be some magic rule to this.

Get rid of the stuff that serves the same purpose.....i.e. different kinds of shape sorters, alphabet toys, etc.

Reduce the stuffed animals to the favorites.
Get rid of teething toys.
Toys labeled 0-6 months
I agree with the PP about duplicates and would work on limiting them.
Broken toys.
Toys with missing parts.

We got rid of a lot of the larger toys. We "lent" them to our friends. I don't care if we get them back for DS#2. Right now the majority of DS's toys are small cars, trains, trucks. No big toys. DS#2's bouncer, swing, exersaucer, etc. make it crowded enough.

If you really can't part with them yet, try buying new storage items to store stuff. I actually just bought a couple of things to organize DS' play area since it was totally out of control. A round collapsible hamper became a stuffed animal bin. A small mesh box for little loose toys (little people, balls, guitar etc). His parum pum drum holds the instruments plus other small toys. The play area looks MUCH better now and he has more room to play.
