Re: Do you live in a town you love ?

We live in Merrick and LOVE it. DH is a cop at JFK and the commute is 20 min. We are actually considering selling our house to move out east near my family otherwise we would stay. The schools are AMAZING. DS#1 is going into 2nd grade and loves it, there are also phenomenal Pre Schools in the area. We sent him to private PreK and I wish I had sent him earlier.

FM me if you would like to know more or come take a look at my house/neighborhood. I belong to several mommy groups in the area for DS#2 (he's 18 mos) and I am prego with #3 so I can give you some great contacts.

PS - we are 10 min from the beaches and the water is literally right down the block from us.

Floral Park Village...It's a beautiful town and very close knit community. We have our own sanitation, pool and police. It's a perfect area to raise a family and the school district is great. My dh works in Bronx and Manhattan and I work in Queens. It takes me 30 minutes without traffic to get to work. I love it here.

i second this... i absolutely love it here! it's also 30 minutes to midtown on the train and driving is about 45 with minimal traffic

I agree with Floral Park and also wanted to add Franklin Square...grew up there and great neighborhood, schools and close to everything. Still have family that lives there too.

You should look in Albertson / Roslyn. Great areas with a nice community feel.

We just bought in N. Bellmore and love the area!!! All our neighbors are so friendly, close to the parkways, not too far from the city, great schools, a real sense of community. You could easily find something in your price range there. The surrounding towns are great options also...North Merrick and Bellmore.

Same. We just bought a house in N.Bellmore (I grew up here so I am clearly biased). I love the town, the commute is pretty good. Very good schools.

Another one recently moved to North Bellmore! I love it, and I commute into the city, and its a quick ride. Schools are excellent which was important for us

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?

I'm going to have to say FLoral Park as well & maybe New Hyde Park.

Just want to add that I used to live in glenh ead (near sea cliff) & my parents are still there & when I drop DS off or pick him up from there, if it's rush hour, it takes me 45min - 1 hour to get home.. 1.5 hours in the rain on the LIE going to douglaston, queens. I find it to be an annoying commute. When I used to take the lirr into the city from there, I hated that as well. Let me know if you want me to elaborate more.

we live in N Massapequa, Plainedge schools. I really do love our area. I also loved ( we looked in) Seaford, Bellmore and Wantagh Chat Icon

we also looked (and bought) in these areas as well. i actually grew up in the town where we bought our house. I like the area and the commute to the city is convenient, BUT the only thing I don't like is the taxes! Chat Icon

Yes I do but we are in Queens, Whitestone. Commute is awesome to the city and you have the best of both worlds "suburban" feel but urban enough to get you where you need to be quickly. Schools are also great.

I agree.

I live in Beechhurst/Whitestone and work in Midtown. I take an express bus in at 730 and am at my desk by 8-8:15. I take a 4 pm bus home and am back in the neighborhood at 10 to 5. You could also take a city bus (about a 20 minute ride)to Main Street to the 7 train.

The school district is one of the top.

Close to major highways and bridgeS.

I will say that home prices are a bit high compared to what you can get on long island, but the area is desirable because of the proximity to the city and the "suburban" feel as mentioned above.

Im a big fan of Sayville as well! (We are right next door in Bohemia) but I know you want closer to the city- Hubby works in Wantagh schools & says it's an awesome district. I know nothing about Nassau.. always been a suffolk chick! ;)

I agree with those who said RVC. If we could've afforded it, I def would've looked there. I also like:

Long Beach
port Washington

I live in East Rockaway and like it, though I like the others above more. There isn't much to the village but they do a bunch of cute fairs, plus I am 5 minutes from RVC, 15 minutes from Long Beach and 40 minutes from the city. Taxes are v low for Nassau.

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?

DH is from Seaford and all of his family still live there.

We'd love to live there too, but I'm a social worker and he's self-employed so it was out of our budget for our FIRST home. Chat Icon

We hope to one day buy his parents out.

It's a great school district.

You can be close to the water or a canal. There are also tons of large, spacious houses above Sunrise Highway as well.

There are express trains that go from Seaford straight to Penn during morning and evening rush. I think it's around a 40 minute commute.

FIL is retired Brooklyn Narcotics and used to make it to work in under 40 minutes by car every day.

It is also close to a lot of other towns that have stuff to do, like Massapequa and a about 10-15 minutes from Jones Beach.

We also liked Long Beach when we lived there, and the commute to the city was about an hour by train, but I am not sure how much house/yard you'd get in that price range down there.

We personally didn't want a bungalow and I would imagine the homes in the East end of Long Beach are over $500K.

Another vote for Floral Park!! We love it here. Small town, good schools, village provides good services, all very close to the city.

Re: Do you live in a town you love ?

We live in Lynbrook and love it. It has everything you're looking for, and a 35min train ride to Penn (on two lines - Babylon and Long Beach). Town, community feel, very family friendly (there are 13 kids under the age of 6 on my block - not my street, my 10 house BLOCK!).

I also love RVC and Floral Park, though commute-wise, Lynbrook trumps all of those. When we were looking, we also considered Syosset (LOVE the town, hated the commute) and Wantagh (too long a commute for me, nice but too big for us).

Lynbrook SD is a blue ribbon district and IMO is a perfect size - large enough to offer fantastic sports and academic programs, small enough not to get lost in the shuffle. (just make sure you're actually in Lynbrook SD - very far north and east may be Malverne SD).

Good luck in your search!
