Re: Braxton Hicks?

I get the same thing.

I asked in my "First Time Around" Parenting Class on Saturday what the difference was between a BH contraction and a "regular contraction". They said not too much! I was told in that BH usually goes away when you change position. Mine really doesn't. My belly just stays HARD almost all night and I have to prop my belly up with a pillow or else the strain of it hanging when I'm on my side is so uncomfortable. Then when I get up to go to the bathroom, it still feells hard.

Supposedly, drinking water helps, too, since the "contraction" can be caused by dehydration, which stinks because it always happens at night when I try to cut back my water intake to minimize the repeated trips to the bathroom.

So, now I'm worried that I won't be able to tell the difference between a BH contraction and a "real" labor contraction.

Re: Braxton Hicks?

Make sure you are staying well hydrated- drink TONS of water, especially in this heat and humidity. That is the number one cause of BH, and dehydration can lead to preterm labor, so you don't wanna mess around with that! BH should only last a couple minutes, although it sounds like what you are describing are similar to BH. Being that it lasted all night and is still hard, I would definitely call your OB to be safe. I got them a LOT with my last pregnancy, but never lasted more than a minute or two. And it was always when I wasn't drinking enough water.

I am really surprised that they told you there isn't much difference between BH and regular contractions. IMO, there most definitely is!! When I had BH, my whole stomach all around tightened and got hard. Never felt painful, just weird. Contractions feel exactly like period cramps, but a lot stronger! The two don't even feel remotely similar if you ask me!

GREAT to know! Thank you!!! I was getting nervous that I wouldn't know the difference, but I'm glad you clarified that for me. Thank you! Chat Icon

This is what I've read. BH don't hurt me..just a tighening like you described. My Dr said something like yeah it will feel like that x 100. hahahah I'm sure you will be able to tell when it's a real contraction!

I totally agree. I had BH with Charlie throughout my 3rd tri and I've been having them with #2 since the end of my 1st tri. BH and actual (labor) contractions feel nothing alike. You will definitely be able to tell the difference.

That said, didn't know I was in labor until I started progressing from 3cm to 5cm Chat Icon (I was just feeling pressure and a real heavy feeling.)

That's awesome though! I want a natural birth, so I hope this happens here! I'd love to get to the hospital and be 5cm already! :)
