Cargo roof for car

Taking DS on his first vacation to Maine. MIL and DH's aunt are in from Hawaii and will be coming with us so we will be four adults and DS in the car. I will definitely need a cargo carrier for our Honda Pilot. Does anyone know where you can rent one (its like $400 to purchase one)? If you have traveled with one before please give me the low down. TIA

Re: Cargo roof for car

do you already have the rack system on the Pilot?

I would buy one.. those last you a lifetime and come in handy.. REI has them for much less.. try either a yakima or a thule :)

We have the side rails but will need to purchase the cross rails which is why this is going to cost us so much. I know it will last for a long time but our Pilot is an 06' and the size of cross bars for the Pilot doesn't fit all SUVs. We aren't positive that we will have a Pilot for life. Plus we don't travel places that require driving often. Typically we go to Hawaii once a year to see family. We aren't sure that it is worth the $400 since we won't get much use out of it.

The crossrails itself is going to cost you a couple of hundred (I paid around 300 or so for mine).

I knowChat Icon which is why I would love to rent a system! Wish I could find a place that did so. We called our local Honda dealership (we heard that some car dealers rent them) and we also tried UHaul. No luck!

Why do you have to buy those? We had a soft carrier and it attached through the windows.

Once you factor in the cost for the cross rails.. cross rails you said were 230, right? I am thinking that renting one will be around 200 bucks(?) for the time you need it (I'm guestimating this) you can just get the rails put in and get the cargo carrier to put on top that'll cost you less than renting it? how about a used one on craigslist?

Did it just sit on the roof?

I would think you would want something keeping it from rubbing up on the roof/windows

I'm not a fan of the soft ones..They sit right on the roof and can scratch your paint off.. they also aren't 100% waterproof.. it's held on with straps on not the steel bolts that the hard carrier has and I'd be petrified that it would fly off lmao Also, I'd be afraid of someone stealing it when I'm stopped somewhere and I'm sure that you will hear it flapping the entire trip and that would drive me bonkers!

Re: Cargo roof for car

I have a Thule soft carrier, and I do have the cross-rails, but really only because I have nothing else on the roof. The bag itself just straps to the cross-rails. I don't see why you couldn't strap the bag to the side rails (as long as you could keep the whole bag from sliding along the rails to the back of the car).

If they are the rails that only touch the roof at the very front and back, and are smooth along the rail, you could just get some cheap C clamps the put on the rail to hold the straps.

Ditto.

This is why my DH got one that works off of our hitch. Plus easier to load than going up on the roof of our SUV

They don't flap if installed properly. It actually prevents theft, since once you get to your destination, you just fold it up and bring it in the room with you, so nobody can steal the actual carrier. The bags themselves are lockable (like luggage) to prevent passers-by from doing anything, and it would be very difficult to try and take the entire fully-loaded carrier.

It's definitely not falling off the roof. I've used mine for almost 8 years, and never had a single concern.

Re: Cargo roof for car

Thanks everyone for your help. We were thinking of going the soft top route but were scared of theft. We will be making stops along the way so DS doesn't get too stir crazy. There is a used one on Craigslist that we are thinking about. The whole set up for $400. We aren't sure if the bars the man has will fit our Pilot. DH will call for the specifications tonight. In the meantime I will continue to look into just a soft top and rigging it on without the crossbars and also a back hitch.
