Do I really need a shower?
Since the usual time for a shower is 30-35 weeks but that time lands smack in the middle of the holidays, I am second guessing the need. I am not sure if its my nausea or hormones - maybe I'll feel differently later- but I'm just not into having one.
We have anywhere from 30-40 people to invite. If its $35 a head x 30-40 people that is $1050-$1400 for the shower. My mom and MIL wanted to buy some big items anyway plus host the shower.
Plus I have some handmedowns that I will use so I won't have a very very large registry. Could me, my mom and MIL buy everything I needed for $1400 instead of having a shower? I guess I'd have a better idea once I register. My mom and MIL think it would be fun to shop for everything ourselves and totally fine with the idea, others in the family seem disappointed and think the idea is crazy.

Re: Do I really need a shower?
I recently decided that I do not want a shower. For me, I have a problem with the whole I'm having a baby bring me a gift thing - BUT THAT IS MY FEELING.
So I told the people around me that I did not want one. That for the effort, time and money that would be put into a shower, I could go out and get everything that I need on my own and be content.
I do plan to do a registry, so that if people want to buy the baby a gift, they will know what we need/want. And then I plan to make it a game with myself about getting the things I need.
So, in answer to your question, no I don't think you need to have a shower.

It's not set in stone that everyone needs a shower, but if you find it not for you then go for it and go on a shopping spree you, your mom and MIL! I'm sure that will be just as fun!

Re: Do I really need a shower?
The thing about a shower is you're celebrating baby with your friends/family who you may/may not necessarily see during pregnancy. It is entirely up to you whether or not you want to do this. I mean, I loved having a shower with DS, but I'm not having one for this one. Your friends/family will want to see you and baby afterward anyway. If you and your family want to go on a shopping spree for baby, that sounds fun too!!!! But I don't think you'll get away with that dollar amount for all that you need...you will prob need to invest more than that (your furniture will prob cost that).

From someone who has had to buy every single thing on our own, it would be SUCH an incredible help to have a spree like that. If you are happy with it I would totally put the $$ towards what you need vs gambling that you *might* receive half the items you need at your shower.
You can always do a smaller home gtg that is much less $$ if you want to just celebrate the baby.

I never had a bridal shower. It just didn't make $$ sense.
IMO, have your immediate family over for cake & milk, get a few balloons, take a few pics & it's a baby shower without the cost.

No you don't need a shower, but they are wonderful to have. Your mother and MIL might be really excited about throwing you a shower. You need so many things for the baby, more then your probably thinking about. The shower really helps and its nice to celebrate with all your family and friends. I say don't think about it so much and have one.

Re: Do I really need a shower?
No you don't need to have a shower. I'm not having a "traditional" shower for religious reasons. Although MIL is a total PITA and not listening to me so she is having a "BBQ" for DH's side of the family and if people just happen to bring gifts, they do, but I'm not opening them or bringing them home.Anyway... My thought was that if people really want to give you a gift they will, regardless if you have a shower or not.

Re: Do I really need a shower?
IMO ur looking at the shower too financially and that's not what it's about. Since you feel this way I would say it might be a good idea to forgo it.

IMO this could be true but you have to know ur crowd.
My bridal shower cost about 4k (85 people) and I got 14k in cash and registry gifts.
My baby shower was at a less expensive venue- same amount of people but cost under $2500 and I got about 5k in gifts. For whatever reason people gave less for the baby shower.
Either way, like I said in my PP if you ONLY look at it like a business proposition then maybe you're not the type to enjoy it anyway- and there's nothing wrong with that either.
