Re: Has/will anyone NOT send DC to pre k?

we are soooooooooooooo back and forth with this-but time is running out.

he is on a waitlist. if that comes true-then we will give it a whirl.
Rather then spend the money on pre k-he can keep his art classes, add in spanish classes, piano and keep his sports.

I just feel like he doesn't need preK.
He has so many years of that setting ahead of him.
Do I really drop him off in the AM and go to our museums and libraries without him???
Monday we are going to a gem mine. I can't see bringing him to prek instead of going there.

my sister is a teacher and says he is fine and kindergarten ready...who knows......

I go back and forth on this. I'm leaning toward no. The school offers it, but its 5 days, which I really don't like at all. Interferes w/ our activities, playdates, etc. If my child was struggling, I might think differently though. Like the previous poster said, they have 12 +++ years of schooling ahead of them.

I am sending DS for 3 days/week. I want him to have the experience so that when he starts full day kindergarten he is not too overwhelmed.

My kids will not go to pre-k, unless I am a SAHM and I can afford to send them for a short time each day.

I am back and forth about it. If I do decide to send DD I will send her when she's 4 for the year prior to Kindergarten. Honestly, the ONLY reason I would send her is to just get her use to being away from me. (I am a SAHM) I was an elementary school teacher before I had her so in terms of any academics and such she's already WAAAAY ahead of the game at almost 3. The only purpose for my sending her to Pre-K would be separation.

DS's daycare takes them until age 5. i plan to leave DS in daycare until kindergarten. mostly because i'm a FTWM and i need him there the full day.

Re: Has/will anyone NOT send DC to pre k?

Maybe this is a stupid question but those of you who are not sending your DC to pre-K, have you sent them to pre-school? If so, do you just skip pre-k, have a year off, and then go to kindergarten? Would that mean they will have no "schooling" environment outside of independent classes until kindergarten?

Just trying to figure out how all this works. I should know by now, my DD has just turned 2.

Me too! I feel like a large Majority of kids now are in daycare or Pre-k from a young age. I don't want DS to be behind with socialization. I think he needs to learn how to socialize with kids and teacher without a parent being around.

I didn't and wont with my other kids. My 4 year old (will be 5 August 1st) never went to daycare or pre-k. She just started a kindergarten jumpstart class this week and is doing great. Glad I didn't waste money on it. I made sure she knew her ABC's, numbers, and could write her name. She seems to be just as ready as her classmates that took pre-k.

Re: Has/will anyone NOT send DC to pre k?

I skipped pre-k and went straight to kindergarten (I was 4). I have always excelled in school.

eta: I was reading in 2 languages and knew all my shapes and colors, I didn't all the letters, but I guess you don't care if you can read. My mom was a working mom (my grandparents watched me), but spent a lot of time with me on learning to do these things and she said I loved it so she kept doing more and more.

I don't know if DS will follow the same path, but if he's ready for kindergarten we might skip it for him too.

I do plan to put him in some kind of daycare but for a few hours a couple days a week, I'm a SAHM and can't justify doing it full time, but I think when he's around 2-3 he'll need an introduction the socialization and structure.

One of my sons good friends never went to any school/daycare at all prior to kindergarten and he is totally fine. Adjusted well straight for the start. :) Do what feels right.

Re: Has/will anyone NOT send DC to pre k?

According to most ped's. The only reason for a 3 year old to go to nursery is for socialization. Age 4 is to prepare for K.

DS is 3, and already meets the educational "requirements" of K (write your name, letter recognition). I will send DS to nursery 2x/weeks, mostly so that he learns to listen and do as he is told (unlike he does with me lol), and so I can spend a few hours with DD alone. I am a working mom, but have 1 day off a week, so I know it will benefit DD to have some uninterupped time with me.

Its fine to not send you child to nursery as long as you are teaching them what they need

Interesting, I can not think of anyone of my friends who has discussed this with their pediatrician, and we have all discussed this issue since I chose not to send my dd to nursery school.

Genevieve was in pre-k, but just the one year before kindergarten. Never did daycare or other pre-school.

She finished Kindergarten at the head of her class, and her teacher would email me periodically thru the school year saying she's amazed at how smart she is, especially as the youngest in the class.

I'm not sure if that had to do with what she learned at pre-k.

We will be sending Billy for one year as well. But we are sending him more because he has separation anxiety and extreme shyness. We dont want to have to deal with that when he starts kindergarten, so we're hoping this will ease the transition when it's time.

Just wanted to point out that alot of school districts offer Universal Pre-k, which is free. Some have a lottery, some have unlimited spots. You should look into it if you want them to go - I think you need to register pretty early in the school year.

pre-k in my school district is only 2 days a week for 2.5 hours a day so yes, DS will be going so that he becomes familiar with the school and isnt overwhelmed for K. im leaning towards sending him to nursery school next year but not 100% just yet. hes watched by family now and is very well socialized so im not sure if i want to take him away from that already. like pp's said, they've got so many years of schooling ahead of them so i want him to enjoy being "free" for as long as possible.

DD is going 2.5 hours a day for 5 days.

I think it's good for her, socially.

My DS has been in school (through EI though), since he's 27 months old.

He still goes. He loves it and he's come pretty far socially!

If he didn't need the EI or developmental pre-k, we'd still send him to a typical pre-k.

IMO it helps prepare them and really helps with social skills.

We plan on doing pre-k. Our school district offers it 5 days per week for 2.5 hours per day. So we will defiitly take advantage of what they have to offer.

Honestly, i think pre-k is a great way for children who haven't been exposed to day care or other structured settings to get used to the whole setting before they start K. Kindergarten is not like it used to be. They now want you to already know how to read and write and know sooo much more than when i went to K. I was the class mom in my older DD's K class and you could see the difference in the kids who had pre-k or day care setting before to the ones who K was their first formal structured setting.

Our school district had this and you just had to contact them in like january or february and they sent you out a packet as soon as they started the registration.
