Hawaii

Is it possible to do a week in Hawaii not including air for $3K? That is including everything else?

I honestly dont think so. And the flight is so long Id say you would want to be there at LEAST 7 days, it takes so much out of you that by the time u feel relaxed it would be time to go home

We went for 9 nites 10 days (maui only). Id say we spent $4,500 on airfare, hotel, car rental and breakfasts. Then about another 3K on excursions and meals.

ETA: Hawaii was so amazing it was worth every penny, so if you can make it happen totally go for it!!

Re: Hawaii

BIL has a voucher for air that has to be booked today.

He is very wealthy and he is trying to convince us to go. We can go anywhere with it but our out of pocket can't be more than $3K. The caribbean fits that bill but hawaii may not.

It's a United voucher so I can't go just anywhere.

It's very generous of him to offer this. He and his family go to Hawaii several times a year. They live on the west coast so it's easy for them.

Even though he knows we are far from his financial equal he thinks it would be great for us. I don't want to stretch my budget so far that it becomes a hardship.

We haven't been on vacation in 3 years so it would be such a gift.

Re: Hawaii

I think it might be possible.

I booked Hawaii for my honeymoon for 2 weeks and including airfare it was around 7500.

I think you can do it. A travel agent will be able to price things out for you and get some good deals.

It absolutely is possible! If you go for to one island, no airfare.

DH and I are going to Maui in October for 13 nights. We're using FF miles for airfare. Hotel (resort - oceanfront room with breakfast included and car is costing us just under $5k for 13 nights.

It is absolutely do-able. This is our 4th time there. The airfare is usually the killer. If you're not paying for that, the rest is definitely reasonable.

Let me know if you need any suggestions on hotels..

Re: Hawaii

I think it is doable if you stay in one hotel only. They will usually give you nights free after the 5th night. It is the food that is the expensive part.

Re: Hawaii

Well we ended up booking a dummy flight to nowhere just so we wouldn't lose the voucher.

We will be on the hook for a $150 change fee per ticket and of course any increase in fare.

Not sure this works out to anything for us at this point.

If you have any suggestions on hotels I would love that for hawaii. I still think I'm out of budget with it.

Any particular island? What time of year are you thinking of going? All of that makes a difference. I can definitely help you out with suggestions and point you in the right direction, I just need a little more info.

Best place to start: www.pleasantholidays.com

You will be able to price things out. For a random week in Maui in October, with car, they have prices as low as $950+ for two people.

Re: Hawaii

I am not sure how good or bad the Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club
2249 Poipu Road · Koloa - Kauai, HI 96756 USA is but for October is it 145 a night (just note some dates the pool is closed for resurfacing so I would go after that is done.) But for 145x7 = 1015 for hotel.

Stayed there a few years ago and it was beautiful! But I would definitely go when the pool was open.

Re: Hawaii

ok, so without taxes and fees on the hotel it's about 1200. Then add rental car, food, drinks and sightseeing.

What is a high estimate?

I really have to think that way.

Also, if I'm schlepping all that way I don't want to go for 7 days. Two of those days are traveling.

Renting a car in Hawaii can be $$$ - but you can definitely do things a little more cheaply. You can get a compact/economy car instead of a convertible or jeep. Obviously, convertibles in Hawaii are the most expensive. I've also had a lot of luck using priceline to bid on rental cars.

I know a lot of people complain about the price of food in Hawaii. Honestly, living in NY, we're already used to expensive food so I don't notice that much of a difference.

Sightseeing - the big ticket items are of course, helicopter rides. Depending on the island you go to, it's not always worth the money. For sunset cruises, do a cocktail cruise instead of a dinner cruise (the food is never that good anyway), etc.

The beaches are free. Drinks ARE $$$ - the best way around that is to go to the liquor store or supermarket and stock your room. We do it all the time. Buy drinks and plastic cups or bottles and a soft cooler and take it with you.

Get a hotel with a breakfast included. For DH and I, it usually averages out that we spend about $200 a day on food, drinks, etc. Some days it's more, some days, it's less.

One of my favorite memories of our first trip was eating PB&J sandwiches on the beach, drinking beer, and watching the sunset. Yes, we had stopped at the supermarket and bought bread, PB&J and beer and stocked up for the week.

Here's another possibility, from another thread:

Groupon

If you know your dates this would be an awesome deal.
Only problem is the availability for properties is only posted 60 days out. So you couldn't book now for say November. KWIM.
