Spinoff of Underage Drinking...
If you feel it is ok for teenagers to drink and you wouldn't have a problem with your own teenager drinking, how would you feel if they did drugs? Even if it was "only" pot?

I'd be upset BUT I was a stupid teenager once who drank and did other things. I almost smoked cigs and I was one of the good kids with straight A's.

Why? Pot causes cancer too. It's just more mellow about it.

I did not say her opinion was wrong..its ok to disagree w/someone. If and only "if" she is ok with her child smoking an illegal drug over cigarettes then its ok for me to say I think thats crazy. Pot smoking can lead to other drugs.. I know first hand what pot can do to a person. Smoking anything is just plain out not good.

I would also much prefer that my kids smoke pot over cigarettes. I have never heard of any actual evidence that pot "leads" to other drugs. To me, your (or anyone else's) personal experience is not that compelling without numbers to back it up. I know people who smoked cigarettes and then started smoking crack. So does that mean that cigarettes cause crack addiction? I don't think so.
There is no evidence that pot is physically addictive, whereas cigarettes are one of the hardest physical addictions to overcome. I realize that pot can be psychologically/emotionally addictive, but so can cigarettes, so that is in addition to the physical dependence.

Re: Spinoff of Underage Drinking...
There IS evidence that pot decreases brain activity. So there is a choice. Do I want my kid to get cancer or do I want my kids to lose their ability to think and make good choices. Decisions decisions.
Im not saying I did neither, I am saying that I am a little older and wiser now and would not condone the use of either drug for my children. I am a non-smoker, non-drinker and not a recreational drug user. I DO have an addictive personality which led me to morbid obesity and subsequently, weight loss surgery. Upon having that surgery, I opted for non-narcotic pain relievers as I did not wish to trade one addiction for another.
If they decide as adults that they want to do this, it becomes their problem and if it becomes an addiction, they cannot do it in my home and expect to live here.

I would rather my kids do nothing but I was a teenager once myself. Although I never tried a cigarette or pot and even as of today I never have, I did drink when I was younger. No matter what Im going to know whats out there and what they are being exposed to.

But people dont DIE from overdosing on pot. If in moderation, it really doesn't have negative health impacts on people, just like alcohol. Key is MODERATION. I see no difference drinking a glass of wine or smoking a little weed.
Cigarettes on the other hand are SOOOO addicting and destroy your body.
I would definitely rather my kid smoke pot over cigarettes.
It's not illegal everywhere, and many people feel it shouldnt be illegal. Alcohol was once illegal too...

Re: Spinoff of Underage Drinking...
Would it shatter my world if my teenager drank or smoked pot? No.
I will keep an eye on my kids though.
There are people who try things, do them on occasion and in moderation and turn out to be educated respectable members of society with good careers like myself an my DH.
Then there are people who smoke pot, then do coke and become drug addicts. Or drink everyday and cant hold a job.
Between my personal experience and my professional experience, working with teens, I think I am a fairly good judge of what is going on.
It is a balance. I am not a parent yet but will be soon, and then before I know it my son will be a teenager. On the one hand I will not be the mom buying the kids beer and stuff. But I also will not show unnecessary punishment if my son gets drunk on prom night.
There are things that are society norms. Drinking in HS is one of them. So is trying pot. I do not plan on living in a dillusional world where I will think my child is above the temptations that many teens fall victim to. I hope to educate and communicate with my kids about alcohol and drugs.

this could happen with drinking as well. that's regardless.
no one is saying they want their teen to be under any influence and then get behind a wheel.

I agree as well. I'd rather pot over cigg's. I HATE cigg's. HATE HATE HATE them!!
I understand pot is illegal... but I don't agree with all things gov't. Jay walking is also illegal. I just don't see that as much of a valid argument in this specific conversation. Mainly because I find the effects of pot to be less than the effects of cigg's.
I also don't believe pot leads to bigger and badder drugs... I find that to be propaganda put out there by the gov't.
I also think the effects of the legal drug alcohol to be worse than pot.
And there are the states fighting to decriminalize pot.... I think Jersey was the most recent to pass that??? So who knows how long it will be illegal for.
And the pill popping era is worse than pot, alcohol, or ciggs. Oxys are the pharmaceutical form of heroin. I'm much more fearful of what these pills are not only doing to teens but also adults. They manner in which they are prescribed is unreal!!! And the thinking on this pill is that they are "legal" because a dr hands them out. Even if the means of which one obtains these pills is illegal... the overall thought is that it's "legal" so it must be safe.
In a perfect world we would all have kids who were perfect and didn't dabble in anything bad... drugs or other things. But that's not the case. My plan is to be realistic about what goes on and to educate my kids on the effects.

ITA word for word with what you said. I also agree with your post above about expectations for your future kids. I feel the same way.
Pills/heroin is soooo scary right now, and so much more of a concern than dabbling with pot.

That's a perfectly valid point of view. However, for a 16-year-old, they're both illegal. I'm not saying that I would condone my child smoking pot. I'm merely saying that I would prefer it to smoking cigarettes. Almost everyone in my high school smoked pot once in awhile. Very few still do. The vast majority of those who smoked cigarettes in high school still do.

I'm pretty sure I knew that. I'm also pretty darn sure that I would not condone the use of alcohol, cigarettes or pot with my children and I refuse to rank them in order of evils. In one way or another they are all harmful and I do not wish my under age children to use any of it at all. I am not saying they won't but I sure as hell ain't going to say "Well gee they can all kill you so I'll pick the one for you that will take the longest amount of time to do its damage." And quite frankly, that is how I personally interpreted the question. Yes, I am strict and conservative and OLD SCHOOL. I'll tell them what I was told in HS:
"You drink and get caught, you lose driving privileges and you go to community college."
That was enough for me.
