Anna Dugger and her delivery
Just crashing here.
But did anybody see the special yesterday?
I cant beleiev she labored at home for 17 hours then had the kid on the toilette.
I know every mom has to do whats right for her, and I'm hapy she did whats right for her.
But after laboring for 17 hours at home...not sure If i would have stayed home at that point.
And I'm truly JUST asking. But how did the midwife say "sure, go to the bathroom. Sit on the toilette because you think you might have to "go"...when I ASSUME she was like 10cm dialated with heavy contractions????
The whole thing was just very odd to me, again WITHOUT me knocing her choice and what was right for her.

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery
Sitting/squatting is the optimal position to deliver because gravity helps pull the baby down but most women's legs aren't strong enough to support them for long.
I didn't see it but I can't really see an issue with that. Plus, 17 hours isn't really that long for being in labor... I was in the hospital and in labor for a total of 15+ hours.

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery

SHe wanted to have a home birth, she had one for her first baby. Unless something was wrong (as in really wrong, not just an inconveniently long labor) she was going to stay home.
A lot of midwives will have a woman push on the toilet. That, or squatting, or on all fours, is actually the best position for delivering a baby. Delivering while laying on your back is a Western construct that's developed over the past 150 years to make it easier on male doctors, not on a laboring woman, her body, or a baby.
Even though I disagree with A LOT about the Duggars, Anna had the birth she wanted in the least restrictive environment.. Good for her!!

How is that any different from pooping on the table while pushing?
Kidding! Sort of

The major difference with pooping on the table is that you aren't on the toilet!! hahahaa!! sorry it's literally the toilet aspect of it that I'm not fond of. I just find toilets to be gross and dirty and i wouldn't want to give birth on one.

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery
If you want to laugh, do a google image search for "birthing chair". That's how most European women in the 15-19th century delivered (well-born women, anyway... the peasants just squatted, held up by their birthing helpers, or godsisters, later shortened to "god-sibs," and even later, "gossips"- interesting word origin lesson there, eh?) A birthing chair looks an awful lot like a modern day toilet!

i wondered why they didn't have some sort of chair made for this.
i'd be fine with a birthing chair, or squatting, etc. Just NOT a toilet... even if there is a resemblance.
If a midwife said to me "hey kerri, it's time you are 10cm go get on that toilet"... you still won't find me on that toilet nor would that midwife ever come back for another birth with me!!
I can totally see the position of sitting up to be more helpful than laying down in a bed... i'm not at all arguing that part. I'm just not into the birth on the bowl thing. hahahaa!

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery
not my vagina, not my place to have an opinion on it.
As long as it was a safe delivery, how a woman chooses to give birth is none of my business.
They used to have birthing chairs (or if you go WAY back, bricks) that position just as a toilet would.....its not something I would do, but it is actually those oldest position to deliver in and most effective in most cases.
As for the 17 hours of labor - that seems like a really reasonable/average or common labor length. I dont see the reason for medical intervention bc of 17 hours of labor.
JMO, of course.

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery
I agree fully with the concept of squatting being the best position for birthing. I even asked my dr if I could do it. But the toilet just is such an unsanitary place. What if baby hit his head or swallowed unsanitary toilet water? Couldn't she have squatted over pillows or something. If I knew I was gonna have home birth id totally hook up a resistance band to a hook in the ceiling and use that for support when bearing down or something & be sure to have a soft surface below.

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery
Happy she had the birth that she wanted, but knowing how my toilet looks no matter how many times a week I clean it, for me it wouldn't happen that way!

Re: Anna Dugger and her delivery
I had a vaginal delivery with my first. The MOST comfortable place really was sitting on the toilet. At one point I told DH to go tell the nurse and dr, that I was not moving and was goingto deliver right there! Sitting on the toilet actually gave me some relief from the pressure and contractions

Me too! I am hoping to be able to labor more in a squatted position with DD#2. With Charlie I was pushing for over 2hrs bc her head couldn't push past my bone...resulting in tremendously painful hemorrhoids
