Do you cook different things in the same oven??

That subject probably didn't make sense, but I couldn't think of a better way to put it.

I am making baked chicken for dinner. I am making banana bread for tomorrow morning. I am cooking them both at the same time in a 350degree oven. My friend said that she would never do this because they were "different kinds of things" and the chicken would smell banana-y and the bread would smell chicken-y. So, she would not bake, say, cookies and roast beef at the same time.

I am Chat Icon over this. How do you ladies feel on this matter?

I do it all the time. If I didn't, Christmas dinner would never be done, lol.

I don't, but I have a double oven so I don't HAVE to. I usually will cook parts of the same meal together. If I am cooking steak on the top rack, I will throw asparagus or potatoes on the bottom rack. I feel the same way your friend does about the flavors melding (though it may not have any validity to it lol).

Same for me. I don't do it because I don't have to.. but I don't like the idea of the scents/flavors meshing. I'm weird like that!Chat Icon

I do, but I don't think I would cook a dessert with dinner in there... I would think the flavors my chicken would get in my cookies!!!Chat Icon

Aside from the flavor, baking is going to get thrown off if there's something else (esp as large as a chicken, not just an extra loaf of banana bread or extra sheet of cookies)...the heat doesn't circulate the way the recipe intends it to. Normal cooking I always put multiple things in together, but meat/veggies aren't delicate liked baked goods are.
