Question for ladies who have gotten prenatal massages...

I love getting them and need one badly. But my question is how do they massage your back if you are unable to lay on your stomach? Are there special beds made with a belly cutout?? Chat Icon Might be a stupid question...but I can't even lay on my stomach at night to sleep...let alone for a half hour massage! Also, any good recommendations for one in Suffolk County?? Thanks!!!

Every place will be different. Some have cutouts in the table for your belly, but I think most have you lay on your side and usually will prop you with pillows. From everything I have read, the second one is the safer option because laying face down with your belly hanging puts strain on your lumber and can cause more back pain.

The place I went to had padding that was placed on top of a traditional table - it reminded me of like the pads they put under gymnastics equipment...like squishy but hard still - and there was a cut out for the belly and your chest. They can adjust the height of the pads off of the table depending on the size of your belly. I did not feel any strain on my lower back at all as it was supported by the pads. I really liked being able to fake lay on my stomach for a short while.

I specifically looked for a place that had a bed wiht a cutout for the belly. Laying on my side isn't comfortable for me in the least. I used James at Above All Massage in Smithtown. Hands down best massage I have ever received. HIGHLY suggest going there.

Re: Question for ladies who have gotten prenatal massages...

i also had a table with special pillows with boob and belly cutouts. amazing. technically, on all fours is the best position for your body/back while pregnant, so i can't imagine being on your stomach with proper padding is bad at all!

Re: Question for ladies who have gotten prenatal massages...

I will give my professional opinion on it.

The safest position is laying down on your side.

While great in concept, those pillow/cushion on top of table systems are really not that safe. Creating intra uterine pressure by pressing down on the back to massage you.

The cutout tables are 1 size fit all. The weight of the baby, with gravity, pulls down. Two main ligaments of your uterus attach to your lower back. The weight of the baby "hanging" will pull even further on those ligaments. Making the whole concept contra productive.

Re: Question for ladies who have gotten prenatal massages...

i went to 2 places.

red door spa in bellmore had me lay on my side with pillows propped around me and then mid massage i turned onto my other side. i personally didnt like that option.

the 2nd one was at Babylon Health and Wellness center. they had a table with a dip for my tummy. it wasnt so much a hole that had my belly hanging out but the table was propped around with pillows so that my tummy would hang lower. they did the massage that way and then had me turn onto my back and elevated my feet and head for the 2nd half. loved this one, highly recommend it

this is very interesting - i wonder why a medical professional told me the best position (not the most practical) is on all fours! it still amazes me the vast difference in opinions that professionals have!

It's not difference in opinions that professionals have.

We are talking about prenatal massage.

So purely in terms of position, there is nothing wrong with laying face down per se with your stomach "hanging" in a table with holes (with no massage) but its' contra productive since most PG women come with low back issues at end of 2nd trimester/3rd trimester. So by laying face down it defeats the whole purpose of helping with your low back pain.

On the other hand, but laying down on your stomach and applying pressure on your back with some resistance on your belly from the other side, creates intra uterine pressure (pushing down on the uterus by applying pressure downwards).

While in labor, you CAN get massaged on all 4. But that's a bit different. You are working with a woman in labor, looking for a "comfy" position. And you can work her back while she is on all 4 (especially for back labor) and do some stretches of low back.

I laid on my side and had a pregnancy pillow between my knees and then switched to the other side. It was great! I'm going to go once a month.
