we give our daughters organic milk, i only drink organic i like the taste so much better and it was the only way i could drink 1%, so for me it was an obvious choice to give my girls organic,
i have also read about girls developing so much faster now, (most girls did not develop so fast when i was young)
and getting af so much younger, there are always exceptions but as a teacher i have seen many girls develop at a very young age and it concerns me
i will say i didnt realize they sell non-organic hormone free milk, this is something i will look into, with twins i go through milk like crazy
so even in a heated debate its good to read people's responses with an open mind cause you just might learn something
also if my girls get regular milk while out or we run out and thats all the store has, then so be it, i just want the majority of their milk to be hormone free

Even without all the dangerous additives, hormones, antibiotics and iodine used to clean the udders (even with organic varieties), cow milk is SO chock full of fat and cholesterol it is an unhealthy choice for anyone on earth, except for a calf.
I asked my dr about skipping milk and he said after 18-24 month when my DS is a little bigger. .
I agree with everything your wrote - cow's milk is for a calf. I see no need for us to have it at all.
I agree with this, I don't believe in giving milk or any milk products, and I don't care what any doctor or nutritionist says about it. Cows milk is meant for calves, not humans. Flame away, but this is MY opinion.
We eat pretty much everything else organic (I'd say 95% of our diets) and only grassfed beef.

I will say this....once people got wind of all of these potential harmful effects of growth hormones and antibiotics and switched to organic, most milk companies started producing at the very least, hormone free milk which is HUGE.
that is what will keep our little girls little girls for a longer period.

this is what I don't understand.
if someone came to me and said, "o, the amount of olives Luce eats is bad for xyz" I'd say "oh my, I didn't know that" and look it up. I wouldnt just say " well too bad. I eat 60 lbs of olives day and I am fine" b/c that serves NO ONE. least of all my son.
Yeah I have to agree with this.. I truly do not care one bit what you want to give you child.. BUT to say.. Im fine or I dont believe in it... there is scientific proof of what is in the milk and that it CAN be harmful..so to say you dont' believe in it or Im fine.....yes we are all fine thank goodness but the cancer I get in 15 years may have been preventable by taking these steps...or I wouldn't be resistant to my antibiotics or whatever it may be... kwim?
Just saying that we should be at least open to the research to make an informed decision..
ok i guess i have to worry about my kids possibly getting cancer in the next 15 years.. its comments like this that cause these arguments.
lin,, you know i love you but its really not right to say..
if this were really true, they wouldn't even have it on the shelves.
I haven't read throuh the entire thread yet but wanted to respond to this comment...
Many, MANY things including cigarettes cause cancer, and they are still on the shelves. Just because something is KNOWN to be harmful doesn't mean someone isn't going to make a profit on it.

My kids dont drink milk but they do have it in their cereal. I dont drink milk at all - dont take cereal and dont take it in my coffee so not surprised that my kids are not big milk drinkers. I used to drink soy at one point but then that has its controversies too..maybe almond is the way to go!
My kids really love the almond milk and took to it right away. It's sweeter and actually has an 'almond-y' flavor - and they like almonds. I did make sure to set them up and tell them that it does NOT taste like regular milk... I think if I'd tried to fool them they would have reacted poorly.
They do not like rice milk nearly as much almond milk. Robbie says it tastes like weird water.
I LOVE me some almond milk but can't drink it because DS is allergic and I'm BFing. I recently tried hemp and it's delish, it has 8 amino acids and omegas 3 & 6. But just an FYI, rice milk has really hih arsenic levels (naturally occurring). The research I've done says it's not great to give kids because of the amount they drink for such small bodies.

Same here. Just because they put the word organic on it doesn't always make it better. there are a few areas where i try to buy organic, but some things just don't make a difference. Our regular milk is hormone free so I don't see a problem with it.

Watch food Inc and it may change your mind, it did for us. Not worth the chance IMO. Why are liitle girls getting their periods at the age of 9? Why are the fifth graders in my school wayyyy bigger than we were "back then"
I don't think any of you who buy reg by any means are bad parents, just saying why we switched.

Wow! Good heads up on the rice milk. They hate it anyway so there's no issue there. I'll give the hemp milk a spin for them too!

Kind of off topic... my son's 4th grade teacher and I were talking because Robbie has a massive crush on a girl and I wanted to know if that was normal. She said thta not only do most boys have crushes right now.. but a huge chunk of the girls in her class have already gotten their period. These are 9 and 10 year old girls! I don't know if it's hormones, milk, water, space aliens or WHAT.. but it's weird to me.

Why do we all have to pass judgement on each other? You parent your way and we'll parent our way. There is a study to back up nearly every side of any argument. Its disgraceful that we have all play the "one-upmanship" game. If we are doing this over milk, formula, etc. what are we teaching our children?
Its one thing to believe in what you are doing. Its another to make another person feel bad b/c they don't or can't parent the same way as you.

I never heard of hemp milk before - I'll have to check it out!!
Both ds & I are allergic to cow's milk, so we don't serve either. He gets soy milk & my dh & I both drink almond milk...it's really tasty! Once ds is old enough to introduce nuts we plan on switching him over to it as well (provided he's not allergic).

I notice there is a lot of talk on this thread about using organic because of the hormones and girls getting their periods early, developing early, etc...and I do agree with that 100%. However there are hormone free milks that are not organic.
You don't have to buy organic to get hormone free.
I only buy hormone free for DD, but I don't feel the need for it to be organic as well.

I agree. Food Inc. was very eye opening.
And people need to realize you can't use the comparison of when we were growing up. All food production, not just milk has changed drastically since then and sadly not for the better.
To each his own. I just think like with vaccines get all the information and make an informed decision.

but I think the problem comes from when people are judgmental about their choices...."why wouldn't you" mentallity is what is killing LIF and feeding into the "woman" stereo type".
Here is the information I found..take it for what it's worth...if you agree great..if not..thats fine too.. but we need to arm EACHOTHER with as much information as possible to HELP eachother be informed mothers!

I agree with this completely. Everyone is entitled to her/his own opinion. However, we don't need to be so judgmental and rude to each other. It is hard enough being a parent and trying to raise our little ones. We don't need to berate each other and belittle each other. We should be trying to help out as best as we can. I am not saying we have to sit around the campfire singing and holding hands. Let's just be respectful to each other.

good lord - I stopped reading at page 4.
I will buy hormone free when I switch DD to milk in a few weeks when she turns a year...not organic. As long as it's hormone free I'm fine.
I do not give into the organic craze...just don't.
The only thing I am a stickler about on certain products - and sorry this has nothing to do with milk - is trying to stay away from High Fructose Corn Syrup. A lot of products that are organic are free of this - like syrup and ketchup - 2 things my DD has a lot of. So on items like those - I buy the organic since the non-organic contains high fructose corn syrup which is like poison and causes cancer.
