Keeping cool with no AC
What do you plan to do?
We will be in our 1 BR basement apt until Aug or Sept (just went into full contract on our house), so DD will be in our bedroom in her bassinet until then. We can't have an AC b/c the windows arent big enough...we looked into the standup ones with the vent, but that also would not work. We have a tower fan in the bedroom, and the basement is usually a few degrees cooler, but it does get hot down here...I was due yesterday, so DD will be here any day now, and of course we are already in 80 degree weather...

How about the portable ones, they have the long tube that you just have to stick out of the window?

We don't have AC, you will survive, I would recommend a fan, although I HATE sleeping w/a fan on , I keep it on in the kitchen though for when I cook ect. If it gets really bad take a trip to Target, the store, library to cool off. I think the biggest thing was showering, or even just putting my feet in cold water b/fore bed - I was showering all the time to cool off.

ITA! the window opening only has to be like 6" and you have to have that, its code for any window!

I once read somewhere that if you put a bucket of ice in front of and just underneath a fan it'll cool the air a bit. I also dated a guy who used to keep cold water in a spray bottle and spritz himself every now and again to cool off, although I don't think you'll want to do that to the baby.

we are getting ac installed in our house this weekend so these last few days have been brutal! we have a couple of good fans that have been helping a little...
i feel your pain tho..hang in there.

I sit in front of a fan blowing on me 
Oops didn't fully read!!! DS currently has the fan on in his room but we plan on getting one of the AC units mentioned above. There a little $$ but you can move them from room to room.

We are racking out brains trying to figure out a way to get this to work...our windows open, but are square...the vent on all of the units we have seen require 18inches and they are rectangle...so we would have a gap from the vent to the top of the window...we would have to somehow rig a piece of wood to cover the gap and keep the vent in place!

thats exactly right. you get a piece of wood and cover the remaining part of the hole. that's the only way it will work, and that is how everyone uses it.
you would also buy the foam kit and place the pieces around the wood.
its very simple
you can go to Home depot and buy the wood. you can actually cut the wood there, so if you don't have tools its not an issue either
