UTI antibiotic treatment
In bit of a dilemma here. I had a urine sample which indicated that I have a UTI or at least a bacteria that has been growing. My OB wants to nip it in the bud so he gave me a prescription for Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim However, this is a Category C antibiotic and it does come with pregnancy warnings. "During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed and this medication should not be used near the expected delivery date because of possible harm to the unborn baby." I am 26 weeks so I suppose that it would be okay for me to use this. Unfortunately, the bacteria I have is resistant to other antibiotics including penicillin. I dont know what other option I have here. My OB said that if the UTI can eventually harm the baby if left untreated. I'm scared of both the antibiotic and the bacteria and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone else used this antibiotic to treat a UTI? Has anyone else used a Category C medication while pregnant? I really need some good advice. Thanks!

Re: UTI antibiotic treatment
I used a ZPAK when I had a sinus infection at the beginning of my pregnancy...I have NO CLUE if that would help your infection though.
Honestly, I would talk to your pharmacist and see if there is anything similar to what you were prescribed that is not Category C, and see what the pharmacist recommends, and then ask your Dr for that. I trust pharmacists more than Drs when it comes to stuff like this b/c it is their job to know all about drugs!
ETA that I dont think ZPak is Category C, but I also dont know if it is used to treat UTIs

Re: UTI antibiotic treatment
You should ask for Macrobid. It is a common antibiotic for UTI's and safe to take during the first two trimesters but not for the third trimester Just realized that you are 26 weeks, the sulfa is probably the best one to take. Feel better!!

Re: UTI antibiotic treatment
I had a bad reaction (vomiting) to the antibiotic, Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. OB now has prescribed Cipro which is another Category C med, but this is because the UTI is resistant to the other "safer"Category B meds. Macrobid sounds like the antibiotic of choice, but I guess its not for the strain of bacteria I have. Dont know what other choices I have. I dont want to harm the baby. Bummed out.
