I tried for one of the Stony Brook ones, and it was a 6 month wait til the next appt. And the Cody Center isn't covered under my insurance (they don't accept most insurance), so that may be a factor for you too.

Dr. Silverman came highly reccomended to us for an issue once. Unfortunatly er next available appointm.ent was over 4 months away and we didn't want to wait. We addressed the issue with our Ped.

Eta- like someone mentioned the Cody Center didn't take our insurance and their prices were insane. I remember a quote in the thousands for testing.

I can't comment on any of those in particular because I live in NJ but I will say that most of them have a looooooong wait time to get an appt and alot of them don't take insurance either. It's very frustrating.

DS is scheduled to see one in the fall, we made the appt months ago. It was like a 5/6 month wait, but, he was the only one somewhat near us that took insurance, thank god he's still very reputable. We could have seen someone sooner but out of pocket costs, just for an eval, were upwards of $1500 for everyone else we contacted. Some did have out of network coverage, but we personally don't have out of network coverage for specialists under our insurance plan. Never needed it until now. Chat Icon

A long wait is typical...Tell them you would take a cancellation and then call 1-2x week to check to see if there are any cancellations. Cody Center has good reputation. Does it have to be Suffolk?

I posted on the Special Needs forum, but basically, I would make one or two appts. for whenever you can get them. Get on the list for cancellations if your schedule allows.

In the meantime, call EI. They can evaluate DC quickly, and if he needs services he can start while you wait for this appt. The wait time you describe is pretty standard from what I have found unfortunately!

We went to Silverman and Scherzer.

Scherzer is horrible! Like really bad, not good at all, worst doctor I've ever been to status.

Silverman was a waste of time. She was nice, but not worth the wait.

Don't know anything about the others.

ETA: I just wanted to add that I would rather pay someone to punch me in the face than see Dr. Scherzer again. He was that bad. Just wanted to hammer that home. Chat Icon

I took DS to dr Scherzer...he is such a cold person and would not recommend him...I wanted an evaluation done on my son ASAP so had no choice but to use him...If I wasn't on a time limit back then, I would have used someone else...

Good luck.

Just so everyone knows, the Cody Center does not accept insurance, and paying out of pocket for the eval is over $1500, and EI will not accept this as a recommendation for services.

I have not had personal experiences with them but I make referrals as a Social Worker and have dealt with many on your list in my capacity as a professional. The Cody Center is wonderful!

Why does EI not accept it? School districts do, and some even pay for it. They do take insurance, but not all insurances, and not usually 100%. You DO have to pay OOP for a report though.

Or course you can always do an eval w/ EI for free, which is the route I would go unless you were having a problem with them.

Oh and I wanted to add about East End.....I contacted them for a vineland (adaptive behavior), and they said the fee was $750. I was shocked at that price, told them so, then all of the sudden it was $350 5 minutes later. I don't like their businesses practices. I felt like they were trying to see how much they could get out of me.

I was the nanny for Dr Adesman many, many moons ago. I can tell you he is a very caring man and an excellent father. Not sure if that helps though! Good Luck Chat Icon
