teachers and maternity leave
Hi Girls, How does maternity leave work if you are a teacher. I really have no idea. I'm also really freaked out about bed rest and what time that effects.

Re: teachers and maternity leave
i am a NYC teacher so I can only really comment about that. You get 6 weeks for a vaginal and 8 weeks for a c section. You have to use the days you have accumulated in your CAR (bank).
Regardless of when you deliver you get that amount of weeks from your delivery date (considering you dont leave early) even if there are days off/holidays during that time.
For example, I due in November. I will most likely be on my maternity leave for Thanksgiving. Because we have 2 days off for the holiday you do not get an extra 2 days added to your leave. However, I am pretty sure those days would not be subtracted from your CAR.
After you use your 6 or 8 weeks (you will get paid during this time providing you have the days) I believe after that (this is where i start to get a bit confused) you can go into a grace period for a certain amount of time and get paid a portion....then you can use FMLA at the end but not get paid.

Re: teachers and maternity leave
I am a long island teacher and due 6/26/. I have been on bed rest since 4/5/ and will be until we deliver. I am currently using all of my bank days to get me through bed rest since my district doesn't offer short term disability. I am also taking a year off for maternity leave for the 2011-2012 school year. Maternity leave for me is non existent b/c of my bed rest using up all of my days. If I still had days by the time I had baby, then my leave would start the day I have him, whether that's in the middle of the summer or whenever. The whole 6 weeks of leave thing only applies if you have 6 weeks of days in your bank to get paid. If not, you can still take the 6 weeks but you'll only get paid for the amount of days you have. Say you only hae 4 weeks of paid days in your bank, that's what you will get. The other two weeks would be unpaid.

Yes.
Anything beyond the FMLA is childcare leave. In NYC you can take 4.5 yrs unpaid/no benefit leave per child and return to your school.
