Can i use my cousins name for my baby?
I really like a name but I have a younger cousin that I'm not close with that has the same name. Is it inappropriate to have two in the same family with the same name even if we arent close?

DH and I were JUST having this convo. My cousins name is Sean, and we love the name, and its on our short list. But, like you, its my cousins name. However, we only see him like once every 5 years or so. So I asked around bc I felt weird about it, but still we arent close and I never see him, ever.....my parents and grandmother seem to think its fine, as does DH. Although Im not completely convinced yet.

IMPO, it no big deal.
If we ever have a son I am naming him after my brother that passed away...my nephew has the same 1st name as does my father, DH & FIL. I dont think its a big deal at all.

I dont see a problem with it but then again I belong to a large Greek family where half of my cousins have the same name because of the tradition to name after parents.
I am a big believer that if you like the name who cares who else is named that...

my cousin's name was on our list of names. Erin.. I really like Erin. But we went with another name instead. I don't think my cousin would have minded... actually I think she would have liked it.

I think its fine! If you and DH like the name than go for it! People have the same names sometimes...in school, at work, and in my group of close friends, there are people with the same name as me!

I think it's fine - I have a cousin named Thomas and my DS is Thomas as well - I see him pretty frequently.

I think it's fine. My dad and his cousin had the same name and we never thought anything of it. Our girl name is the same name my cousin just named her daughter in Feb. Go with what you love!

I dont think its a huge deal, but DH and I both liked the name Samantha, and didnt use it because DH has a cousin named samantha

I think it would be absolutely fine if you really love the name. My DH has two nephews with his name and he was flattered, even if they weren't exactly named after him.

I'm having the same problem. We love a name but DH has a 2nd cousin (who is a teenager) with the same name- first AND last!
IDK what to do either...
Everyone in the fam says it's okay and do it (DH has like 50 cousins so it gets hard not to repeat especially when you are looking at certain ethnic names) but I still feel funny!

sure you can, I have 2 first cousins with the same first name (and not for any other reason other than their mothers liked the same name). Lots of people in the same family have the same name, its hard enough picking a name without adding extra obstacles

I have an older cousin with the same name as me. We are 2nd cousins, my mom almost did not name me my name bc of it but since it was her favorite name she did. She is so happy she did, we see the cousin a cple times a yr and it is no problem.
I actually love a name that my 2ns cousin named her son and am debating it bc of the same reason. So I see where you are coming from

DH has 27 first cousins. If we eliminated all his cousin's names (plus my 5 cousins), we'd have had no names to choose from. Not to mention his 27 cousins' kids... his grandparents have over 30 great grandchildren already. It's insane.
If you love a name, no one in your family has "name rights" to it. Name away and be happy!

I agree with this!
I have 50 first cousins and majority have kids of their own so imagine!!
I am probably using my first cousin's name as a middle name for DC.

see in my family it's the same thing. Two of every name...but in my family it's because they named after father-in-law so my SIL and I will be both naming our sons Joseph after our FIL. So two Josephs in teh family oh well. I am still going to name my son that.
