Re: hospital bag?
I just started organizing to do this and I refuse to overpack! So I'm taking the bare necessities.
Underwear Nursing tops/bras A few disposable nursing pads Yoga pants flip flops deodorant hair ties brush maxi pads iPad & charger camera & charger cell phone charger Baby's take home outfit
Extra bag to take home gifts and supplies from hospital
I'll probably toss a little concealer/foundation in the bag just to keep my face fresh if people take pics when they visit.
So many BTDT mommy friends have all said the same thing to me: I wish I didn't overpack because the hospital gives you so much. They have so many toiletries there and I'm only going to be there for 2-4 days max, and if there is anything I need, DH can grab it or I can request it.
After the baby is born I'll have him bring in the boppy pillow.

Re: hospital bag?
Do you need a copy of your birth certificate and your marriage license or is that just precautionary?

For me, it's just precautionary. I was filling out the form for the birth cert/ss application and it said that they MIGHT need a copy of the marriage license, so I didn't want DH to stress about where to find it, so I'm just including it.

You do not need these items at all. At bare minimum you need your insurance cards.
Depending on your insurance and the hospital you might need pre-admission forms or hospital approval paperwork, but that varies for each individual. Even if you don't have the pre-admission forms, you can just fill them out when you get there. It just saves a little time if you have them already when you arrive.
We're skipping all that ourselves, because we are already in the hospital's system for having to be in labor & delivery already one time during this pregnancy.
