Here is a great tip...Windows are all different sizes and one panel is actually usually enough to cover the whole window. I am not really the type who only likes one panel per window (I like to have the curtains parted on either side of the window). But if I buy two panels for one window there is SO much extra fabric left over, its a waste of money. So I buy one panel per window and then cut them in half and use no sew hem tape to finish the cut sides. If you have 3 normal size windows in your room you would only need 3 panels NOT 6. I went to Ikea and got their plain white curtains (2 per package) and was able to do 2 regular size windows and one Bow window with two packages. So for $30 I have curtains for my whole livingroom. Not to mention that I need longer curtains and they come unhemmed.

Of course this being said - you need to be able to see the potential in things. If you already have curtains you LOVE, its probably going to be hard to recreate cheaper, unless you are willing to compromise.

Thats a really great idea! Thanks!

are you craft at all?

These are SOO easy to make.. all you need is a trip down to the fabric store!

I was going to suggest this.

my MIL made the curtains for every room in our house.

I can't sew worth a damn, but if you find someone who can, it will be WELL worth it.

Just be careful, Fabric (especially Home Decor Fabric) and get very expensive. My MIL is a seamstress and she says all the time that sometimes buying the fabric and taking the time to sew can cost just as much if not MORE than just buying them already made. It depends on whether you are trying to save money or you are interested in getting a custom look.
