Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

At only 5 weeks I'm constantly fearing the worse (miscarriage). This is my first pregnancy and have never experienced a loss but all I can think about is misscarrying. Is this normal to fear during the first trimester? I feel like I should be happy but Im just scared...

I was so worried also. It's normal to be nervous about everything throughout your entire pregnancy. Hang in there Chat Icon

Thanks ladies. Im glad to hear this is normal. I just want to be at 12 weeks already since thats when they say the chance of miscarriage is lowest. I know things can still happen but Im just driving myself totally nuts.

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

It never really gets easier. I always say that all those pregnancy books should have on the first page of the first chapter, "Congrats, you're pregnant! You will now be utterly terrified for the next 9 months."

Even with feeling this baby kick up a storm all the time, I still always have a terrible "what if" fear that something could happen.

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

I drove myself (and DH) crazy for the first 12-13 weeks, I was so anxious all the time. I had a chemical and a miscarriage so I was so afraid to feel happy and excited. I am finally starting to relax a little, Im 14 weeks, although I still have moments where I am utterly terrified but Im trying really hard to stay positive

I was so scared that I didn't enjoy first trimester and didn't actually truly celebrate being pregnant. Everyone else was excited but I didn't let myself bc was nervous and said what if!

OMG yes. My first pregnancy we lost HB at 10wks. So this preg at 10wks i had a total meltdown & didnt have a Dr. Appt for another 2 wks so I decided to just make a Dr appt & go that night. They were nice enough to put my fears to rest. Im 29 wks now. All is good. Its normal. But try to relax & make sure to rest & get feet up.

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

totally normal.....I have never had a MC, pregnancy with Eddie was textbook perfect, but I worried the entire first trimester, until after the NT scan. It eased up after that, but I still found things to worry about! So you would think Id worry less this time, nope. Still worry constantly about it.

This happened to me too. I had a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks. I'll be 10 weeks tomorrow and i've had 3 ultrasounds so far and so far so good. I had my last sono at 9w1d. I don't go back till 12 weeks and am freaking out. I'm driving poor DH nuts every night. I am so paranoid. I wish I could just fast forward time.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only crazy one!

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

Not only is it normal, but it may last until the baby is born. I thought I'd feel better once I hit the 12 weeks mark. Then it was 20 weeks. Now it's 32 weeks. I still look at the TP everytime I go to the bathroom.

I am almost 12 weeks and am still super nervous. So much so that we haven't told a single person that we are pregnant! I am hoping that after we have our nt scan (this friday) that I will feel more at ease. Chat Icon

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

Definitely totally normal! However, if it's any consolation, once you see a heartbeat, the chance of miscarriage drops to 3% and that's as low as it gets for the rest of the pregnancy! So you don't need to wait for 12 weeks for the chance of miscarriage to hit the lowest. Chat Icon

Honestly, you never stop worrying. There are so many things. And by never stop, I mean ever, once they are born there are a whole new slew of things.

But, it does get easier and you enjoy more than you worry. It is totally natural to worry, so spend a few minutes worrying and then move onto all the good things and refocus. Good Luck Chat Icon

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

Of course. It's scary! I would always check for blood when I went to the bathroom. I did have two miscarriages, but I think I would have been nervous no matter what.

Just try not to let the fear consume you; you want to enjoy your pregnancy too. I tried to let go and just trust that everything would work out, but I still had that fear. I was nervous every time we went to the doctor that I wouldn't see my baby's heartbeat, etc. I am still nervous, but again trying to make sure it doesn't consume me!

Re: Is it normal to fear the worse during the first trimester?

i was going for weekly sonos with my re in the beginning and I would freak out that something was wrong between those appts. We would go see the babies and find out everything was okay...so I would feel better for like a day and then start freaking out again. I am now 14 weeks and it has gotten a little bit better but I am always still paranoid something bad is going to happen.

I sometimes feel guilty for being worried. I am TRYING my best to stay sunny but until I see our baby's heartbeat I am battling with myself.

It's normal and I think it's a preview to parenthood Chat Icon We'll always worry about our little ones. My prayers are with you! Do what you can to relax and savor your pregnancyChat Icon
