Pediatrician poll

Are you girls going to actually interview pediatricians?
If so what goes on in an interview and what do you ask?

I met w/ our ped before I gave birth. Didn't go there w/ any prepared questions. Just talked w/ him and liked him. Ironically, once I gave birth, we saw another dr at the practive for the first few visits...we liked him and switched to him.

Re: Pediatrician poll

I did not interview our pediatrician. We went based on recommendations. I figure if we end up really not liking him/the practice, we'll switch.

Re: Pediatrician poll

Yes, when I was prego with DS I called 2 Peds that were highly recommended in my area. When I called both places had no issues about meeting with the Doc. I guess it's normal to them.
Here's some things I remember asking:
spacing out vaccines
hours
late hours
who to call after hours
waiting room (sick and well, do infants go in right away)
weekend hours
well visits
are they affiliated with the hospital you'll be delivering at
Hep B. will they do it? You can opt not to get it done at hospital

I liked to get a feel of them as well. I really wanted to make sure I felt comfortable too. Make sure they're not too opinionated, give you plenty of time that I didn't feel rushed, etc

Good luck!

that's what we're doing too. i talked to my DH's co-workers wife who lives in the same town as us and she has 2 kids. we trusted their opinion. are we supposed to call the ped to let them know that we will be using them? or does the hospital take care of that once the baby is born?

Re: Pediatrician poll

I'm not because I'm going to the place I went to as a child and the doctors I like are still practicing.

Re: Pediatrician poll

I'm going to ask around for a reference of one and meet with them some time in the third trimester.

If I like them, I'll use them, if not, I'll keep looking.

The great thing about doctors is you can always change if you don't like them.

Re: Pediatrician poll

We met 3, i think based on recommendations. It was more to assess comfort level but we did ask about breastfeeding support, vaccines, hours, etc.

Re: Pediatrician poll

I don't plan on interviewing our pediatrician either as she's come so highly recommmended, however, I did call to ask some questions.

When I spoke to the secretary who answered the phone she was able to answer questions regarding the ped accepting our insurance and hospital affiliations. She also explained we could make an appt to come in and meet with the dr but if we didn't feel it necessary just to give her name to the hospital once I give birth and the hospital will contact the ped and she will come in to meet with us and examine Chat Icon

I'm sure it's similiar in most practices...

I would like to have a consultation with the pediatrician.

I want to ask about:

alternative vaccination schedules.
what hospital she is affiliated with.
Emergency visits
weekend schedule
etc.

I know who we are going to use solely based upon reputation. I'm going to touch base with the practice just to let them know I plan on using them and to verify they take our insurance.

I may meet with him ahead of time just to put a face to the name but I really don't have many questions. As long as the way he practices is within the accepted standard of care in the medical community, which I'm sure it is, I don't care about vaccination schedules, etc.
