FYI. Warning for rice milk drinkers for children
I started my son on gluten free casein free diet last week and in my research I've learned that rice milk contains arsenic. Wanted to share. If you google there are tons of articles. I don't understand how the FDA allows this. Rice dream package reads children under 5 consult a doctor. This is because infants and small childrens bodies process arsenic different than adults.

You will be shoked how many things have arsenic, apple juice does too.
Chickens are fed arsenic, it makes them grow bigger. Scary stuff and the govt allows it all.

Re: FYI. Warning for rice milk drinkers for children
Wow...this is upsetting, my daughters been on rice milk for the past six months. I switched from soy after hearing all the possible side effects from children being on that too young ....Ugh!!!!I guess I'll have to find something else. And I don't want to introduce any nut milks she's only 17 months. Anyone ever heard of anything wrong with Hemp Milk?

Re: FYI. Warning for rice milk drinkers for children
The University of Aberdeen’s A. A. Meharg and colleagues did the study, which involved analyses of rice purchased at U. S. supermarkets. A previous study found that U. S. rice purchased in the United Kingdom had higher arsenic levels than rice grown in Europe, India or Bangladesh.
In the study, researchers compared arsenic levels in rice from the two main rice-producing areas of the country — the South Central States and California. They focused on inorganic arsenic, which the report describes as a known human carcinogen and implicated in several other diseases.
Rice grown in the South Central States had more arsenic than California rice. Rice in those states often is grown in old cotton fields that previously were treated with arsenic pesticides, the study states, adding that arsenic-tolerant strains of rice often are grown in those fields.
When researchers modeled rice intake, they concluded that certain population groups could get dietary exposure to arsenic that exceeds California’s state exposure limits. Those groups include low-income individuals who consume large amounts or rice as an inexpensive food; people with celiac disease (who eat rice as part of a gluten-free diet); Asian-Americans who consume a high-rice diet; and Hispanic infants and toddlers, who also have a diet high in rice, the study notes.

I find this crazy! I am so glad this was posted. I usually buy organic rice, but my husband never understood why it was so important to buy organic rice. This is a good reason!

organic or not... it doesn't matter in this case
You can grow certified organic produce on soil that has had pesticides in the past, there is no regulation on it. The point is that rice was grown where cotton once was. Even organic rice is grown there. It doesn't matter if you don't spray any more pesticides, the pesticides are already there, in the soil and water.
You can buy the most expensive organic rice, and it can be the one highest in arsenic content.
Its important to understand what organic means, and sometimes it isn't the best.
For instance, they are developing strains of rice now that do not absorb arsenic, but by definition this rice could not be organic as it would be genetically modified, but it would be the rice that has no arsenic.

Re: FYI. Warning for rice milk drinkers for children
The FDA warning against rice milk is not due to the arsenic but b/c rice milk in not a nutritionally complete item, and the FDA doesn't want to be liable for any child that becomes malnourished due to rice milk. Obviously, it is not a big deal in this area b/c 90% of the children here have access to a full range of nutrients from food, but it is more of an issue for areas of povery.
