BF diet question

Is the breast feeding diet restrictive like the pregnancy diet...as in no cold cuts, soft cheeses, etc??

Or can you pretty much eat anything while bfing?

Yes, it's mostly the same. Except, if you want to have any of the stuff ur not supposed to, you can always pump and dump!

Re: BF diet question

I was never told not to eat cold cuts or soft cheeses while I bf my son - i was just told to restrict high mercury fish - and follow what he could handle and to dump when i drank more than glass of wine or beer

my son never had any issues with what i ate so i did not restrict at all - some people have to limit green veggies or tomatos or spicy food or even milk but i was fine

I'm not a BTDT mom, but just doing alot of research on breastfeeding and my mom was a lactation consultant for years. I don't think there are many food restrictions besides for fish high in mercury. None of the reading did said you had to avoid sushi, cold cuts, or soft cheeses. I know there are quite a few restrictions medication wise, but not as many diet wise.

Being a EBF mom of 21 months....you can eat ANYTHING YOU WANT! Some things may make your baby gassy, like brocolli for me - but really just in the beginning. After the first few months, their tummy's are OK to handle more. I ate coldcuts, soft cheeses, spicy food, gassy food, etc. I also drank while BFing. If you can drive, you can BF!

You can eat everything and anything!!!!

You can even drink (if you have hours before you have to nurse again)

All women of child bearing age should restrict their high mercury fish - but that doesn't mean you can't eat it

and you dont have to worry about any of the listeria risks either like soft cheeses and cold cuts.

(For the first three months I had to limit garlic, chocolate and red sauce - just b/c it would give DD a tummy ache but as she grew older, she got over it!)

This! Even alcohol runs through your system like it does the blood. If you can drive you can breast feed your child. I would never pump and dump and there are absolutely no food restrictions unless your child has an allergy or intolerance.

I totally disagree. You can eat virtually anything while BFing as long as DC doesn't have a reaction to it. If you notice DC seems uncomfortable after a gassy food, I'd avoid it for a while and try introducing it into your diet when DC gets a little older. You can also drink alcohol in moderation. There's no need to pump and dump after a glass or two of wine.

ITA with the PPs - I ate anything I wanted (I don't eat fish, so can't comment on that) - except onions...since they made DS#1 fussy

and you can drink as long as you don't feel the alcohol anymore - the milk is safe and if you are tipsy - pump and dump!

Re: BF diet question

I eat almost everything. DD gets gassy when I eat beans, but anything else is fair game.

i didnt give up anything while I breastfed..and I breast fed both my kiddies for a full year each!

This is a common misconception!

Def do it all!

I also drank on occasion and never pumped and dumped! NOT NECESSARY!!

you will make it harder on yourself if you restrict yourself!

ITA! I never restricted any food, in fact I ate more than I did while pregnant! I do know in some cases some babies can't tolerate the dairy ... but you will know from your child's reactions.
