Spinoff to pregnancy dos/don'ts

I've been laughing to myself all day at the thought of a seat warmer being able to "melt" a mucus plug. Chat Icon I thought it might be fun to share the craziest old wives tales or dos/don'ts given to you by well-meaning, but crazy, people in your lives.

For instance, a co-worker told me that I had to watch out for gestational diabetes when I told her I was pregnant. Her reasoning? "Well, because you are heavier, your pancreas is larger. And as the baby grows, he/she will push on the pancreas and that causes the diabetes."

This was a MOTHER, too. Someone who gave birth in 2009. Chat Icon

Mind you, I did wind up being diagnosed with GD ... but I would NEVER in a million years share that with her, lest she think she was in some way correct!

What are some crazy warnings you've been given?

Re: Spinoff to pregnancy dos/don'ts

My family dog died a little over a month ago.

He came to our office daily where I work with my father. When it happened, we were all very sad I was sitting at my desk crying.

One of the guys who works back here told me that I needed to stop crying because I would "hurt the baby with my tears".

I wanted to d*ck punch him.

No vacuuming! Not that I'm complaining. DH can do it. But that is insane to me. Also, no reaching for things! Heaven forbid! Chat Icon

I'm so sorry about your dog! Chat Icon But I'm laughing at your use of the term "d*ck punch." Chat Icon It would certainly have been deserved!

Re: Spinoff to pregnancy dos/don'ts

My best friend's husband's wife had some crazy stories.
First off... she's a nut! Whenever they have parties I have to laugh talking to her. We were prego around the same time when I was prego with DS a couple of years ago.
I don't know what OB she was seeing, but the man seemed to be on something and probably got his degree online or something Chat Icon
here's some things I remember -
- she was told not to give up smoking b/c the baby is already addicted to the niccotine so the baby may go into withdrawl (said her OB instructed her to keep smoking cigs)
- she was told she had a little Va-jay jay hole so she was getting a sched c-section from day 1. (DH and I laugh at this b/c can you imagine how little her DH is if she can't get anything big in there) Chat Icon Oh, and hello... women's bodies are supposed to dialate
- she thought that since she didn't drink at all and was told 1 cup a day was fine she got drunk at a party b/c she didn't drink during all the pregnancy (doesn't mean you can drink 9 months worth)

There's some other crazy ones, but these stuck out. I always loved hearing stories
She was lucky her DS was fine and healthy

My friend once told me that babies have gills when they are in the womb & the gills close up b/f they are born.

yeah...sure they do Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

When I questioned her, her response was...wait for it......................

"Well how else do you expect them to breath?"

I kid you not, by the way, we were 25 when she tried convincing me of this

OOOhh can I play?

I was told that I could not be in the room with a poinsettia, that it would kill the baby! OMG I was mortified as she went through my MIL's house and brought them all outside!

and one from AFTER the baby was born. . . . .

Do you know how many people asked me if she opened her eyes yet?! SHE IS NOT A KITTEN!!!!!

Chat Icon

OH And every time I cried, my mom would tell me to pump and dump my milk - b/c the tears would "sour" it for the baby! LOL

My MIL told me not to vacuum. No complaints here! DH vacuums every weekend now, no questions asked!

And DH is a little weird about having sex cuz he feels like hes knocking on the baby's door!

And I just love listening to everyone tell me how I'm carrying and what I'm craving, I still have my beauty, and barely any morning sickness, etc - I'm having a _____. Chat Icon Oh yea? Well I guess we'll just have to wait until September to find out!

Re: Spinoff to pregnancy dos/don'ts

ahhh my story is similar to yours in a way.

i had a coworker tell me I was going to get gestational diabetes because I was drinking a cup of caffeine free soda.

Another day she saw me eat a piece of chocolate and again I was told I was going to get GD.

I did get GD... but it's NOT at all because of that cup of soda or that piece of chocolate!! Needless to say, I don't want her to know I got GD. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I've actually seen something regarding gills on some documentary show one time. So this made me google it. I found this (the girl was asking about being born with gills so the answer is suited for that question):

You have received a great deal of false information. First, babies are not
born with gills! Get that out of your thinking! Babies do not "breath"
for oxygen in the womb. They do "practice breathing" using the amniotic
fluid of the womb, but it is not doing them any good otherwise. All of the
embryo and fetal needs are received through the placenta. The mother
provides everything that is needed.

As for the gills, there is a stage in the early human embryo development
whereby humans do show gill slits, but not functional gills. Slits are not
gills!! As a matter of fact, all vertebrates show these same gill slits.

so there are no gills... but gill slits that become a part of the throat. They are not at all the same as a fish's gills would be.
the breathing in the womb thing your friend say though... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I love this one! I just smile and nod. As if the way I look is going to determine if I'm having a boy or girl! Ridic!

Here's a strange one: DH got a foot spa for his birthday. (One of those little baths you put your feet in.) And I was so excited about using it but my mom and MIL both said I can't use it because I might go into labor. Seriously!?! I'm using it when I'm home alone then!

Haha.. I've heard that certain pressure points on your feet can induce labor (like while getting a foot rub) but never that dipping your feet in warm bubbly water would Chat Icon
