A how do you shop, question....

So that JLo thread got me thinking.

When picking out your clothes/shoes/accesories/etc, What influences your decisions?

Your age?
Your profession?
Your marital status?
Your body type?
If you have kids or not?
All of the above?
Do you not consider any of these?
or only some?
Do you consider some factors for certain outfits depending on where you are going to wear them?

What do you do when shopping?

Re: A how do you shop, question....

I think I tend to go by body type the most, although if I really like something, I'll try it on anyway, hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

The one thing I alway do is NEVER ask where would I wear this? because if I like it, I like it, and something will come along where I can wear it to.

I only consider body type

I don't care if it's how a 22 year old dresses - if I look good in it, I'm wearing it.

I have been guilty many times of buying something and never wearing it because I had nothing to wear it to, so I HAVE to ask where I'll wear it and whether it's something I will use.

I also take into account body type and my own personal style, which I rarely deviate from. It's safe and boring, but I know what works for me.

I mostly just consider my body type and and style. I try to wear something that will look flattering and matches my style.

Re: A how do you shop, question....

I consider my body type for the most part. How comfortable I feel in it, how it fits etc.

I also consider the price and how often I will wear it. If its a trendy item that is $$ I more than likely will wait until it is on sale or skip it completely.

Or I see if it comes in a more neutral color - like black so it can last longer in my wadrobe.

This is me too. My weight unfortunately is a constant battle for me. I have dropped 70 lbs 2xs in my life only to gain it back again. So I am usually some where between a size 0/2 - 10. Of course when I am a size 0-5...its balls to the wall and I primarily buy whatever I think looks awesome on!

I am that annoying chick skipping through the mall w/a cool aid smile and my own theme music. When I am on the upper end of the scale, not so much..I am an uber emo shopper and dont set foot in the mall unless I am literally forced to.

Re: A how do you shop, question....

I am lucky in that I am pretty good at assessing what items will look good on my body type before I hit the dressing room.

Once in the dressing room, and something fits correctly, I usually ask myself

does this look GREAT on me or just OK?
(would I compliment Me on this if i saw myself wearing it?)

do I need this (where will I wear it/use it)?

can i afford this right now?

If it doesnt pass, I usually put it down.

Body type is#1, but all of that comes into consderation. I can't afford to buy clothes that I don't have a use for or room for, so that is a big consideration. Also, because I am a creature of habit, " Do I have this already?" is a big one.

I don't say, well, would a 35 married woman wear this. . .but I think it is sort of subconsciously there when I consider where I would wear it , and if it is "me."

Since I am heavy, I more often finds myself wondering if something is too old lady, more than if it is too young.

Re: A how do you shop, question....

I definitely think body type first, though I have gotten a lot more adventurous with styling so I tend to think about ways I can use the shape differently (belting, tucking in, etc) and what else in my wardrobe it would go with. I definitely think about where I would wear it (work, play, both, fancy, etc) but if I really love something I might buy it and wait for an occasion to come up. I consider my personal style for sure, and also the price and whether this is a store with a sale cycle that I know (I basically never buy anything at full price, but I know for example that Lord and Taylor has 25% off coupons a few times a year, and 20% off coupons pretty regularly, so if it’s a 15% off coupon that week I might wait for the next week to see what comes then). I love shopping!

I buy a lot of stuff online, but I may stop because half the time it just looks "ok" and not "wow". I usually know by looking at something if it's something that will be flattering on me, although this is easier to do in-person rather than online. I dress for my body type. I am a SAHM, but unfortunately I'm attracted to dressy clothing and heels, so I have way too much of that and hardly any casual clothing.

Re: A how do you shop, question....

I have a definitive style and I don't really branch from it. I definitely shop for occassions and for my body type. I have bought things in the past that were just on a whim and they sat around didn't get worn.

For me, I like clean designs that flatter. I am not big on things that are trendy.

Me too.... But I also think where I will be wearing it, and if I can wear it for more than one type of event - example - can I wear it to work AND a nice night out if I just accessorize differently?

Re: A how do you shop, question....

I guess I shop based on where I will be wearing it. I'm pretty much the same size I was 10 years ago, so age isn't a factor. If it looks good, I'm wearing it!

Work clothes - comfortable, form fitting, able to mix-&-match. I shop in the same one or two stores for work clothes. I'll spend more money per piece, and most of my pants are dry clean only. All outfits worn with 3" heels.

Non-work clothes - Comfort, casual, practical with a child. Jeans & tshirts, tanks & shorts. Machine washable, especially now that I have DS. I wear low-heeled shoes/boots, or flat sandals. My jeans have to be tailored for this length.

I have very little going-out clothes. I hardly go anywere special. When I do, I can wear tight jeans and a nicer work top. It's boring to me, because it's my every-day work tops, but still nice. I'd lke to dress more trendy, but it's not practical for my lifestyle.
