Would you take a shorter maternity leave...

I'm trying to pin down a proposal for when I tell my boss I'm PG. My hope is to go very PT and I want to work out the details now so I'm not stressing over it during leave, but obviously, if I'm not coming back FT, I'm assuming I'm not entitled to the time I would be if I was. I had typically taken nearly 16 wks with my boys. I guess if I get approved to return half time - some in, some out of the office, I would only get half my leave. Again, no clue if this is possible on my employer's end but I want to be honest and upfront with my "ideal" and go from there.
So if you knew you were returning to work PT, would you be OK with losing out on ML. With my vacation time, I guess I would get closer to 10 wks.
Will it even be manageable for me to get my butt in a couple times a wk with 3 kids at home that early on?

With DD1, I went back FT after 12 weeks, PT after 8. With DD2, I went back PT after 9 weeks off and worked PT for another 8, effectively lengthening my ML. Now I'm back FT.

I would absolutely do it again. In your case I would too. By then you may need a bit of "adult interaction"

I could be wrong, but I think your leave is determined on time you've worked up until, not necessarily what you plan on doing afterwards.

Unless, you think it will sweeten the deal to say you'll take less time.

This would be great, and you could be right. I'm not ready to find out yet until I'm ready to share Chat Icon

Oh Jessee...

You are going to stress about this for the next 12 months. I feel it.

Because you're going to work out a PT plan and he may or may not go for it initially, but when you do come up with something you can both agree on, you're going to decide you want to stay home with Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That aside, are you thinking of working out a deal like you did with Ryan where you used your vacation time to work short weeks? Didn't he reject your original PT suggestion? I'm not trying to be a downer, I just totally think you're going to wind up staying home in the end. Chat Icon

ETA: I definitely don't think you should sacrifice your ML because you think you want to go PT. You're entitled to your ML because of the work you're doing now, not what you plan to do later. The only thing to consider are your benefits... generally you keep your health insurance or whatever during ML based on the fact that you're going to return, and if you don't return, some companies will bill you for it.

Re: Would you take a shorter maternity leave...

I came back to work part-time and I didn't think twice about how much maternity leave I took (4 months). I don't see how it would change anything on your company's end?

The only thing I had to consider was that I am now accumulating leave MUCH more slowly than when I was full-time so the longer the maternity leave, the more time off I used, the less leave I have in my bank.

I would get the part-time approved first and then talk maternity leave.

Take the whole time you need/want for maternity leave. Things can change. Take 1 thing at a time. Get the most maternity leave you want to take, THEN deal with the next chapter with PT.

right, but part of my proposal to return PT would be being upfront so they can hire an additional person instead of "making do" for my leave. Around here, it is helpful especially if they knew that I would be here and able to train someone else.

Chat Icon I don't have 12 months to stress over this - my kid will be STTN by then and that's saying A LOT Chat Icon

I honestly am not looking to stay home. I know working FT isn't going to be feasible, or afforable with 3 in daycare, but I do enjoy working so I hope and pray for a happy medium. I want to present it in the best light without screwing myself Chat Icon
I don't need my healthcare benefits - I'm on Pat's as well, but obvioulsy want my retirement. I hope to return enough hrs to maintain my benefits, but am flexible on that.

With Ryan he never rejected my PT request - I asked to work from home and he ignored me and then I never brought it up again b/c I was PG again about 2 months later so it was NOT in my best interest to push the issue Chat Icon
After Colin I obviously was approved for PT but it was 4 days a wk, which around here is barely PT.
Half time is 22.5 hrs wk for this office.

Re: Would you take a shorter maternity leave...

With DS I went PT after ML and took 12 weeks off (could have taken up to 9 months unpaid as per our contract). I guess it really depends on what kind of company you work for and how flexible they are. If you don't want to do that, don't offer it. Give them the proposal you are comfortable with and see how they take it. If they say no then maybe go back to them with the shorter ML proposal as a backup plan. Hope it all works out for youChat Icon

Re: Would you take a shorter maternity leave...

I don't think you'd have to take a shorter maternity leave if you returned PT.

I believe you are entitled to 12 weeks if you have been working there for over a year.
