CVS test help....

So I am torn on whether or not to get this test done. I know everyone says it's personal preference. A friend told me they do the delivery differently if it comes back positive which is good to know...but on the other hand I've read that it can lead to a miscarriage or limb defects. What did you ladies do?? We would have the baby and love it the same no matter what...but then if we find out he or she does have Downs or something else we can better prepare. I am so torn. Any advice?

I know it's a hard decision to have it done or not. I debating for a long time. The miscarriage rate scared the heck out of me.

If something is g_d forbid wrong with the baby you could prepare for it before hand and choose what you want to do. If the baby is perfectly healthy then you go on with your pregnancy with no worries.

My doctor informed me that the risk of a miscarriage is very low and any test/procedure you go through has risks.

I went through with the CVS on Monday. I'm pregnant with triplets, so they had to inject the needle three times. The procedure itself wasn't bad at all and if I had to do it again I would.

It really is a personal decision and you have to do what is best for you. Best of luck with your decision.

I think the mc rates are skewed. M/C can happen at that time - it's still the 1st trimester.

I never heard about limbs! They don't go into the placenta, so i think that must be a myth.

I had results that came back abnormal, but what was frustrating with my abnormality, it is often contained in the placenta and not the baby. I had 3 full anatomy sans after that and an amnio to confirm everything is fine, but now we know it's isolated to the placenta, they are monitoring me for growth issues (if the placenta cannot grow with the baby)

even with that - i would do it all again. My good friend is 2 weeks behind and she had great results right away - so for that reason it's great!

Re: CVS test help....

Well I always say its a personal decision, but since you already know that, I will say that I've had it done for both of my pregnancies, and here is why:

1) I think its important to know what to expect, so you can be prepared, the doctors can be prepared and so you don't have ongoing anxiety for the rest of your pregnancy (especially if nothing is wrong). More knowledge to me is always better. Also with the hormones that flow after birth I can't imagine finding out any bad news at that point.

2) if you go to a doctor that has done many of these, and is expert at what he or she does I don't think there is really that much of a risk. As others have mentioned the miscarriage rates are skewed by those that would have miscarried otherwise, and having had it done twice, and watched on the ultrasound as they did it, I personally don't feel that is too invasive (but of course I'm not a doctor)

3) for me the risk of a baby with DS was higher than the risk of miscarriage with both pregnancies, that also helped to convince me of the way to go.

If you want to talk more, feel free to FM me. Whichever way you decide to go, I hope everything turns out great for you!
