Child Health Plus
Since I'm most likely not going back to teaching for the first year after our baby is born, and DH doesn't have insurance, we are going to put our baby on this. I just checked and we are eligible so that's good!
Does anyone have this or plan on using this for their baby?
Do a lot of doctors take this? From what I;ve been reading, there are different plans with this through Empire Blue Cross, United, Oxford, etc...so I would assume many doctors would accept this..right?
I'm nervous about all of this and would love to hear from anyone who has experience with Child Health Plus and participating doctors. TIA

Re: Child Health Plus
I'm in the process of filling out the appl now. To add DD to my plan through work it's going to cost too much so we are putting her under CHP. What I did was call the pediatrician I plan on using and asked them what plans under CHP they cover. They cover 3 plans so I went with the one I thought was best. She's not born yet but I want to have the appl filled out and ready to go when she's born. If you have any other questions feel free to fm me, I've had alot of help bc it's confusing!!

Thank you. I just called to get the application mailed to me. I did something online to see if I was eligible and it said yes for $15 a month. How do I know what plan I can use? Do you get to pick Empire BC, United, etc?
I'm a bit confused on that part.
I will look for a doctor soon and definitely ask to see they take that plan. Thanks!!!

Before you chose a plan, make sure you know which pediatrician and hospital you will like your baby to go to for care or in case of an emergency. Then choose the CHP plan based on that. Don't chose a plan until you know which doctors / hospital. If you chose a plan before a doctor, you might encounter that the docotr you want your child to see does not accept that plan. In order for you to change health plans under CHP you would have to cancel one plan and then open a new case with another. It is time consuming and your child might be without coverage while the transition occurs.

Thank you! So, I'm able to pick any of their plans? I thought they assign me a plan based on our income.
SO I will find the Dr I want first, and then pick the plan. Perfect! Thanks :)

Agreed. I'm glad someone told me to call the pediatrician first. I went online and printed out the application myself and have it all ready for when she's born. I plan on sending it out within the week she's born. The appl is due by the 20th of the month in order for her to be covered by the 1st of the next month. Good luck!

Yes pick the dr first and find out what they cover and then base what you choose on that.

Re: Child Health Plus
What if your income changes after you've already qualified for the plan? DH, who is self employed always experiences a boost in business during the summer months. Do we let them know and have to requify?

Re: Child Health Plus
I believe that some of the CHP plans may require a referral to see a specialist...so that would be another thing to look at while choosing a plan...also, do these plans include prescription coverage as well? If they do, it would be important to see if the different plans have different drug copays...some rxs can be expensive.

Although CHP is a State Health Insurance Program, the various health plans that participate with it still work like private health insurance. In fact, they are private working with the government. They all have to offer a basic package. You will need a referral to see a specialist for all of them. In fact, even the health plans that work with Medicaid (which some of them are the same as the ones that work with CHP) also require a referral to see a specialist. What you might encounter is that if you see a health provider within a hospital or clinic affiliated with a hospital, they might take care of the referral internally and you might not be aware of it. As far as prescriptions, they all offer a basic package for most common prescriptions. However, if the insurance does not cover it, you will have to pay out of pocket.

If your income changes, it will be up to you if you want to let them know or not. It is recommended that you do especially if the increase last more than a month. You do not have to requalify, but what will happen is that the premium rate will change. For example, you initially paid $15 after an increase in income you will pay, $25 . They can't "drop" your child from coverage, because in the State of New York ALL CHILDREN are covered under the CHP.

No problem. Anytime. I work for a program that helps New Yorkers navigate the complex health care system under the Federal Health Reform Act. We are advocates and operate a State Wide Network. I am more of behind the scenes (development and program) but know the basic information you were inquiring about. I hope I was of much help.

Is CHP a New York only State Program meaning you have to reside in NY or if it for other new england states as well?

CHP is a New York State Program; each State manages their own program. Check with that State's Health Department Program and you should be able to find out what they offer.
